ALL ENGLAND V. CANTERBURY.
SEVEN ENGLISH WICKETS DOWN FOR THIRTY. Christcudrcu, Monday. The All England cricket match commenced to-day, the. weather being beautiful, and the ground in spleudid order. Over 1000 people were present before the match commenced, and the numbers continued to increase as the day wore on. The grand' stand, erected to accommodate 800 people, is largely patronised. There. is very little betting, 2tol on the Englishmen being the longest odds offered. Two to 1 on Canterbury not being defeated in one innings is freely offered, but finds very few takers. Lillywhite won the toss, and elected to go in. At 12-45 p.m. the Canterbury meu appeared in the field, and were greeted with applause. Chariwood and Jupp were warmly cheered, they being the first to appear at the wickets. C. Frith opened the proceedings by delivering to Jupp, who off the second ball drew first blood by a draw to leg. Sweet took the ball at the other end, when a bye was run off the first ball. Chariwood broke his duck's egg by one to leg off Sweet's 'last ball, and followed up by one and two off Frith. Afterwards his bowling improved. At one o'clock the first ten appeared on the telegraph. The bowling is "good and' the fielding capital. Singles came slowly till ten minutes past one, when Chariwood was cleaned bowled by Frith, amid loud cheers. Game, 14—1-9. Selby took the vacant wicket, and Jupp shortly after made a single. There was careful play on all sides, and at 1-17 Jupp gave Fuller a difficult chance afc short siip, which was splendidly taken. 15 -2—4. By the second bail' of Sweet's next over, Selby was clean bowled, retiring for a duck's egg. 15—3—0. Canterbury men jubilant. Greenwood next appeared, and .sent his first ball forward for one. The bowling and fielding continued very fine, Frith being particularly difficult to play* and the Englishmen puzzled by most of his balls. The score mounted slowly by singles and a two by Greenwood, when at I*3o Ulyett slogged at one of Sweet's, but did not get well hold of it, and was splendidly caught by Fowler at the wicket. 22—4—3. Shaw filled the vacancy, made 3 singles, and was clean bowled by Frith. 25—5—3. Armitage took his place, and made a single. Several maidens followed, and then Greenwood hit Frith over long stop's head,- and was splendidly caught by Neilson. 26— 6— 4. Emuiett next showed at the wicket,; and made two singles. Then Armitage cut Sweet for two, but sent the next ball to mid off where Lecretan made a magnificent catch. 30—7—3. It being' now two o'clock the adjournment was' made for lunch.
