City of Sydney, arrived at Sau Francisco on the 10th instant, two days after the contract date. The delay was caused by the steamer having, after, leaving Sydney, to make a detour by way of Auckland aud Kandavu, which made her late in. starting from the latter point. We take tbe^ following from the Post of Thursdayi-^The R.M.S. Zealandia, with the incoming' English mail \ia California, left California-on the 3rd inst., three 'days after the date givenin the time table (3 1st prox.) This delay is' attributable to the mail leaving London proportionately late. This arose from fche germination on 31sfc December last of the coufcracfc with the Inman Line for carrying the mails across the Atlantic, no fresh tender, having been entered into. It appears that fche various steamship companies declined to .tender _on- the terms prescribed 'by, the English postal authorities, hence a ! special arrangement has to be made every month for the trans-oceanic conveyance of the mails. 5 Thus, as the time is calculated from the steamer's departure from San Francisco, the Zealandia will not be due afc Auckland until Tuesday next. [As will be seen .by .our telegrams the Zealandia arrived this morning.]
