The Hart and Searell Company gave another capital entertainment last night to an audience who appeared to be highly pleased with the bill of fare and the manner in which it was carried out. To-night the performanne will be under the patronage of the All-England Eleven, and we can recommend all who wish to spend two happy houra to be present. I The proceedings in the Synod last night were unimportant. At 11 o'clock they adjourned until 7-30 this evening. In consequence of the death of Sir David Monro, who was the President of the Har- I monic Society, the usual weekly practice will not be held this evening. The New Zealand Cros3 is to bo presented to Mr Maling, who was Sergeant in the corps of Guides daring the native war, at half-past six this evening in the Botanical Reserve. The presentation was to have been made by the Hon Major Bichmond, C.8., but on hearing this morning of the .death of Sir David Monro, he at once wrote to Captain Marshall, stating that in consequence of the loss of an old and valued friend of thirty years standing, he must ask to be excused from taking part in the ceremony, into which he could not under the circumstances import that amount of spirit which should be one of its chief characteristics. His Lordship l the Bishop of Auckland, who, as a military chaplain, has seen some service, has been asked and has kindly consented to present the Cross. The Post of yesterday says:— "Prom a calculation made at the Meteorological Office as to the amount of rain which fell during the recent five days flood, it appears that taking the mean rainfall with the known area of New Zealand, the quantity . of water precipitated on these islands during those five days amounted to the amazing total of 500 billions of tons.
