Blenheim, Monday. The following are the entries for the Marlborough Races: — Handicap Hurdle Race: Mr Stevenson's DickTurpin; MrM'Artney's Whalebone: Mr M' lvor's Tom. Finn; Mr Blower's Nero. Shearers' Purse: Mr Stevenson's Jonathan Wild; Mr Ward's Lara Finn; Mr Rives' Morning Star and Nero. Hurdle.Race: Jonathan Wild, Whalebone, Finn, and Nero. Maiden Plate: Mr Redwood's Ladybird; Mr Stevenson's Barmaid and Finn; Mr Rives' lady Mary. Sapling Stakes: Mr Redwood's Ladybird, Pori Pari, and Rata; Mr Stevenson's Awatere; Mr M'lvor's Halfcaste. The acceptance for the Blenheim Handicap are as follows : Mr Redwood's Ranker; Mr Stevenson's Blenheim, Lara Finn, and Lady Ma y, Mr Blower's Doncaster, The same horses accepted for the Marlhorough CupC Donedin, Monday. At a meeting held this afternoon, for the purpose of raising a subscription for a testimonial to Captain M'Lean, the sum of £150 was collected in the room. The Otago Volunteer representatives left hy the Hinemoa this afternoon. Christchurch, Monday. Reports from the country districts respecting tlie crops are bad. Tuesday. James J. Pain, clerk of the Waimafce Road Board, has been arrested for the embezzlement of £988 belonging to the Board. The Mayor has declared a half holiday for each day of the All England cricket match. A. meeting will be held in the cifcy and suburbs on Thursday night to protest against Mr_Carrufchers drainage scheme. The weather is very fine for harvesting.
# Napieb, Monday. The flood is the highest experienced for twenty years. Two boats went out on Saturday afternoon from the Spit along the Taradale road to Taradale, and removed several families from their houses, where they were in danger of drowning. In one house the husband and wife were standing up to their* wa'sts in water, and the children climbing up on the beds. The boat went to the doorway and removed the occupants. After removing some people to a place of safety, the pilot boat with a load of other men, women and and children was caught by the eddy and swept about, but ultimately was enabled to fasten to a tree, and there remained all night in the rain. The hmses in Taradale were much knocked about, A good many sheep were washed on the beach. The approaches to several bridges were carried away, and the railway bridge embankment was undermined and half washed away. The bridges themselves were uninjured, but some ballast on the line was swept off. Trains are not running to-day. It ceased raining yesterday until the evening when heavy showers fell; the same to-day, but the water is subsiding, though very slowly. Auckland, Monday. The Glenlora inquiry concluded to-day. Captain Mitchell was censured on three points, but his certificate was not suspended; Bailey, second mate, was suspended. Grahams-town, Tuesday. The rainfall registered from Saturday at 11 a.m. till Monday evening was 6.78 inches. New Plymouth, Tuesday. The Nominations for the Jockey Club handicap closed on Saturday evening, with the following horses :— Ariel, Bedouin, Bidenell, Elsa, Fireiail, Flora, Iniquity, May Mood, Monarch, Ohopai, Opawa, 0 tawa, Perfume, Rangatira, Resolution, Sir Walter, and Tawera. Por Handicap Hurdle Race .-—Gazelle, Medora, Perfume, and Shaughwour. * The declaration of weights to be on Saturday the 17th inst. At the cricket match the English men won the toss and went to the field, Shaw and Lillywhite bowling, who took the first three wickets without a run. The innings closed for thirty-two. Armitage and Ullyett then commenced the innings for the Eleven at 2.2, Armitage was bowled out, the last wicket falling for 80 runs, Ullyett having made 18, Greenwood 10, Emmetfc 12, Shaw 8, Charlwood 5, Southerton 8, Hill 7, not out. Bowling analysis:— Taranaki Twenty-two: Cleary, 25 runs, 1 wicket, 56 balls, 2 maidens; Davis, 6 runs, 3 wickets, 32 bails, 2 maidens, FitzPatrick, 41 runs, 6 wickets, 88 balls, 3 maidens. English Eleven: Shaw. 11 runs, 6 wickets, 100 balls, 18 maidens; Lillywhite, 19 runs, 13 wickets, 98 balls, 13 maidens. The match with All England Eleven was resumed at noon, the weather being beautiful. The Taranaki Twenty-two resumed their innings with Harrison the " not out " of yesterday, who was faced by Muggeridge, Southerton bowling instead of Ullyett, and his bowling was most effective, demolishing nine wickets in an hour. The only Taranaki men who made a stand were FitzPatrick and McKellar, who made five and six respectively. The total score at 1.15 p.m. was 33 with 15 wickets down. The steamer Taupo is waiting to take the cricketers on to Nelson. The cricket match finished at 2 p.m., when the Taranaki 22 were all out in the second innings for 47, Totals : All England, first iuniugs, 80; Taranaki, two innings, 79. -A--. Dunedin, Tuesday. • The Council of "the Convention have held a meeting when the following resolutions were agreed to :— " That in consequence of the continued ill health of Sir George Grey, and the short time that must elapse before the meeting of the Colonial Parliament, this Council is of opinion that Sir George Grey and Mr Macandrew should not at present proceed to England."— "That the petition ordered by the Convention to be sent by the delegates be forwarded to the Secretary of State for the Colonies."— " That the province of the Convention remain as an organisation to watch the interests of the colony against the efforts of the Centralists."—" That this Council deeply regrets the continued illness of Sir George Grey, and hopes that he may soon be restored 'to his wonted health and strength to further the battle in the interests of the colony against the wiles of Centralism." The treasurer reported that he had received a considerable sum by way of subscription from the country districts to assist in defraying the expenses of the delegates. It was agreed that the collectors should be written to asking if, in the altered circumstances, the contributors wished their amounts returned, or Avhether they would leave them for such objects in connection with the Convention as might afterwards be resolved on.
