CITY COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held last night. Present : His Worship the Mayor, Crs Hooper, Levien, Gray, Webb, aud Waters. The Mayor gave an explanation of his \ action with reference to giving holidays to the men on the regatta days, which was considered quite satisfactory. The opinion of the Solicitor to the Council regarding its borrowing powers was read, in which it was stated that the Council could not borrow uutil the opinion of the ratepayers had been taken. ' A petition from residents in Waimea-st. was referred to the Public Works Committee. The foiiowing telegram from the Under Secretary of Works referring to the Port extension of the railway was read:—" To the

Mayor of Nelson— ln reply to your telegram of this date, lam directed to state that soon" after the receipt of your letter the survey of another line waa put in hand, by which it is proposed to leave a width of road not less than 50 feet from tbe railway fence. When this survey is completed you will be further communicated with, bnt I am to point out that it is a question of money, and no definite reply can therefore be given until the increased cost of this line, as above mentioi ed, is carefully estimated." The report of the Public Works Committee was read, which recommended, among other works, the extension of the Waitneas jreet sewer, and the Surveyor was instructed to prepare plans aud specifications. The City Surveyor reported that during the moith 296,260 cubic feet of gas had been made, ancl that of this 75,770 feet were lost by leakage. Cr Waters thought they should obtain the services of some manager of experience to report upon the reason of the loss by leakage, which, he considered, was greater than it should be. Cr Gray thought it was owing to the large extent of the service and the paucity of consumers. Tlie following tenders were received for the supply o_ 1000 yards of metal for the Port road:~R. Carter, 7s 6d per yard; R. Grant and Co., 8s 6d; G. Newport, 8s 6d; D. M'Rae, 12s s£d. The tender of R. Carter was accepted. Mr D. Gilbertson's tender- for the supply of hme at 2s 2d per bushel, being the only one received, was accepted. The foiiowing tenders for clearing gorse were received, and that of John Smith for each section was accepted:— For Section 5— John Smith, £11 15s; James Woodman, £24; R. Piper and Co., £22; D. M 'Donald, £25 19s; Jn"n?s Ke110w,„26 15s; George Ingham £29; I), M'Rae, £35 9s. For Section 8— John Smith, £4 17s 6d; James Woodman, £6; R. Piper, £7; D. M'Rae, £7 18s; Butcher and Co., £8 10s; Alex. Williamson, £10. , Cr Gray thought it was of little use clearthe gorse if briars, docks, and manuka were suffered to remain in tt c streets. It was decided that the streets should be thoroughly cleaned. Several other matters of little importance having been discussed, the Council adjourned. J — — ---'-I .J !_,
