Rives has been . appointed . ,Cap-r tain of the Normahby Hussar Volunteers.A meeting of the Regatta Committee was held last night, Mr A, J. Richmond in.ther chair. It was resolved that the: deficiency; should be ascertained, and provided for by a subscription from the members together with such outside assistance as could be obtained. It was decided "hot to appeal against' the -judgment of the Resident Magistrate in the yacht case; but that the money and Cup ' should be handed over to Mr Richardson. To this Mr Hewson, on the part of the owners of the Secret, raised an objection. A sub-committee consisting of the Secretary, Treasurer, and Messrs Moor and. West was appointed to wind up the affairs and prepare a balance sheet. The sale of work in aid of the Christ Church Parsonage' -fund opened this afternoon, and was well attended. , There is a large , variety of such articles as are usually " to be found at bazaars, -and also a number of novelties which are pretty sure to meet with a ready sale. -The sale mil be continued during this evening and to-morrow afternoon and evening. There will be music at intervals, and tea will be provided at a small charge. • • '..•:. Mv Giniia writes to us from Motueka Valley, re-asserting his statements regarding the treatment accorded to Mrs Bailey and, her child recently at the Taranaki Buildings, and saying that he is prepared to repeat on cath the statements made to us, and which were published in the Mail. It is only fair to say that we have seen Mrs Carter, the matron, who positively denies the whole ac« cusation, and applies to 'Mr Gibbs a very strong term, the nature of which is to impugn hia truthfulness. The Silver Cup offered as a prize for the Yacht Race, together with 30 soys, was presented this afternoon at the Masonic Hotel to Mr Richardson, in the presence of a number of the Committee and others, by Mr. Everett, the Treasurer to the Regatta Committee, Avho congratulated Mr Richardson on being the winner, and said that, although there had been some friendly differences of opinion as to the award of the prize which rendered it necessary to obtain a legal decision, that decision haying been . given, he had very great pleasure in handing the prize to Mr Richardson, who replied in a few well chosen words, and the Cup was then filled and re-filled more than once with sparkling " ltoderer," those present drinking success to Mr Richardson and the Gannett. Mr then handed 20 soys. to the Treasurer, towards, meeting the expenses of the regatta, an act of generosity which was acknowledged by the cheers of those present.

' If he does not leave for America by the next mail steamer, he will probably pay a short visit to Nelson. ', The Congregational Church tea and public meeting takes place this evening at 6.30, .The Volunteer Fire Brigade i .adjourned special meeting takes place this evening at 7 t 30. A" ijdeeting of the Southern Star Lodge will be held this evening. A special meeting of the members of the Naval Brigade will be held at the Custom House Hotel this evening at half-past seven o'clock. A Triumph op Chemistry.
