THE LATE ELECTION PETITION.
! To the Editob of the 'Evening Mail.' V Sib,— Your correspondent "F" in his weekly letter of Saturday last must have thought , he made a great hit when he described a certain candidate as having qualified himself for nomination by paying himself and giving, himself a receipt for his read rates,;&c.; &c. ' If the hearing of the petitions in Court afforded him the pleasure he> says it did, I. am only sorry to interfere with his innocent amusement; but I must correct him, as he has not stated the case fairly, as I never, paid myself, nor did I consider it necessary that the candidate should be a voter at all, but I took the precaution to collect the rates from both of my nominators, so that no hitch should occur in my nomination, and gave them receipts as Chairman of the Waimea Road Board, which I had a perfect right to do. That my reading of the Act Was correct is evidenced by the fact that his Worship ruled in my favor on both points. So that had sufficient time elapsed between the nomination and election, I must hayefbeen elected, as being the only candidate properly nominated.—! have, &c, 1: a ■, - . : i- " W. White.
