The Ashley and Geraldine County Councils have resolved not to bring the permissive portions of the Counties Act into force. The grain market has been exceedingly quiet during the holidays. Wheat is out of the market, and quotations are nominal. Oats meet with moderate demand, at 2s 2d to 2s 3d for good to fine, up to 2s4dfor milling; barley for feeding and milling purposes is in improved request at 2s 9d to 3s 2d; malting, nominal, 4s, but almost unsaleable. Timaru, Friday. : The Geraldine County Council have elected Mr Postlethwaite, J.P., Chairman, and ha^e decided not to bring the Act [into force. The South Canterbury Acclimatisation Societyhave resolved to liberate 5000 American salmon in the River Opiehi. ' - Auckland, Thursday. Thomas Capper, for uttering a forged order for £5, was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment. Francis Lynch, charged with appearing at Coromandel as a voter and falsely answering to the name of W. Wright, of Wangapoua, pleaded ignorance and having done so at the suggestion of another, bnt was sentenced to nine" months' imprisonment. "Dr. J. G: Smith has been sent to. the Quarantine Station. The value of imports for the quarter ending December is £234,251; exports for the same period, £206,140. A fire "on the New North Road to-day, destroyed the house of a settler named Clarke. At the Supreme Court, Mary Ann Cane, pleaded guilty to the concealment of birth. Judge Gillies commiserated her unhappy condition, and regretted he could not punish her seducer. She was sentenced to twelve | months' imprisonment. Mr Wareham, of the Waste Lands Department, appeared to answer to a charge of contempt of Court, in writing a letter to Judge Gillies concerning the case of a prisoner named Draper. Wareham pleaded ignorance. The Judge severely admon/shed Mm and he was discharged.
