MR. DISRAELI AND THE JEWISH PBOPHET.
Lord Beaconsfield must have been studying the book of Daniel. It h to belive that anyone but he wrote the pompous, proclamation iv which Lord Lytton announces tbat on tbe Ist Januaryj 1877, be shall hold an ;"Imperial Assembly" at Delhi to poclaim Queen Victoria " Empress of India, " and announces tbat be proposes to invite "the governors, lieutenantgovernors, and beads of administrations from all parts of the Qieen's lodian .dominions, as well as -those princes, chiefs, and nobles in whose persons the antiquity of the past is associated with the prosperity of the future, and whoso worthily contributed to the splendour and stability of this great empire." As the Record has pointed out, these are almost the extract words of Daniel, chap. , iii. , v 2 j " Then Nebuchadnezzar the king called together the captains, the judges, the treasurers, the councillors, the sheriffs, and all the rulers of tbe provinces, to come to the dedication of the image which Nebuchadnezzar the kingi'had set up." Is Lord Beaconsfield trying to imitate Babylon, or is he thrusting bis tongue in his cbeek at tbe golden . image he is setting up on the plain of Delhi ?— Spectator.
The proprietor of "Enoch," that queerest of religious publications, which has its home At the: Thanies -in -'the Auckland Provincial District; declares that he is £16 out of pocket jiud that he fears he must cease to publish any longer. This don't matter much as, according to the last number, the world is just about to come to an end, and there is " to be ja general wiudrup of all the vain works of fallen man." — Post.
