EXTRAORDINARY ESCAPE.
; The following extraordinary escape of several persons from drowning is related by the BallaraS Star :■— About 5 o'clock on Thursday, 7th inst, some children of a widow named Gowland were washing in the dam a child's jcradle, when the youngest boy fell in. •The mother, living close by, hearing ;l he screams of children, ran to the place, and on learning what had occurred, 'plunged, in to rescue the child, bat being ;out of her depth and sinking, a daughter likewis? jumped in to the assistance of her mother, but, being also out of her ;depth,.she was on the point of sinking when a miner working in the neighborhood ran to reader assistance. Being encumbered with heavy mining boot^ add unable to swim, he was placed in a [very perilous situation; but haying thrown into the water previous to entering it a large stick, it was of some assistance to himself, and the mother, and daughter, until further help was forthcoming, which came iv the person of a Mr Wood, who, fortunately, was a good swimmer, and immediately diving beneath the' water, brought up the boy, to all appearance dead, and fortunately succeeded in extricating the others. The boy was immediately taken home, and the usual remedies for such cases were resorted to, and we are pleased to say with success.
