When the Hurunui got clear, those . on board believed she had knocked the mizenl masfc out' of the stranger. : The Huruuuilost her jibboom, bulged in one of her iron _, plates and cracked two others, so that the water rushed in and filled her fore compartments. ; She; returned to Plymouth for repairs'. The next day three of the crew / of the ;tixeek;barque Pater drifted ashore at ~ '.'■ Portkarris Bay in a boat without oars, and reported that their vessel was struck at the mizen mas t t,"\and her stern nearly carried away. She sank and eight of her crew were . drowned. The. men state that, those on board the barque called out to the ship, and beard confused orders, but. she kept on her course. Until^the collision took place. They : . also say that' the ship did not stick by to give them any assistance, and in reply to ■ their dries fdr help, they heard voices call 1 out "'•Gii^on, she has no lights showing." The men aver" that' the barque's lights were 1 burning .brightly, when she was struck. The emigrants will remain on board the Hurunui '_-■ until repairs are effected, which are expected not to take more .than week., . Port Chalmers, Tuesday.. Arrived — Ship May Queen. 105 days from London with 1500 tons cargo and 24 passengers. She encouutered aterrific cyclone in the Bay of Biscay on the 28th September when she : lost her bulwarks arid; crossjack-yards. The sea. filled the deck and washed away the live-., stock. Thence^she had fine weather and strong breezes till December 7th, when site, met with a terrific westerly gale, add was' hove to under close-reefed topsails:. The mate, Francis Godolphin Boise, in loosing the fore topmast stay, was waahed overboard and was lost. The next day Capt, Sachell, was thrown out of his bunk "while asleep and fractured his collar-bone. Passed a dead body in oilskin clothing on the 9th December. Made the Snares on the 30th, and encountered a heavy northerly gale for 145 hours, in which she lost part of her bulwarks. Detective Dalton, of the London police, arrested one of the cabin passengers named Jackson, charged with the embezzlement of £900, the property of the Colney Hatch Company's Bank. A draft for £450 was found on him. Jackson was accompanied by his wife. Napier, Tuesday. About five o'clock on Sunday afternoon the house of Mr Wood, manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Waipawa, was struck by ligttning. The electric fluid entered the building, making an opening in' the roof and side of the wall, entered a room where two children were at tea, and struck a, little girl (Mr Wood's daughter) on the foot, and a boy (Mr' Wood's stepson) on the chest, killing him instantly. The girl was only slightly injured. Mr Wood was in the conservatory, aad was knocked against the wall by the shock, but was not injured, though the wall paper was scorched.
