The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1876.
We publish to-day a document that 'is ..always looked for with some • degree 'of •interest and -eagerness at this time, of the year, namely the report of the examiners for the scholarships offered to the Governihent schools, together with the list of candidates .who presented themselves, and. the' result of the examinations. Compared with that of ■ kstyear the, present report is by no means satisfactory,-. showing, as :it does, a very marked falling off' in the number of those • who obtained jtlie , minimum .of 'marks that' -' would entitle to a, scholarship, namely, 3.0 out of a possible- 600. Last year one boy . , from . the.. ppyrh andseven from. the country : passed, .the < minimum, this year ' none from the t6,wi_..an;d only three from the country '"' " srecured that, position, although . one of the ' papers, that on.' The Lay of the Last Minstrel/' ' is admitted to, have been easier at the recent . examination .than at that which preceded it, while. the arithmetic paper was " no. harder." It is true that the. examiners speak of the standard attained in 1875 as an " exceptionally high" oue, butit is difficult to find a reason why it should' have been higher then than how. Still, the fact that" it was so is patent to all who* will compare the two reports, and it* certainly is the reverse of gratifying either to teachers, parents, children, or examiners. , The programme proposed for next year '■ 'strikes us as beiug better adapted. "to the , purposes of these examinations thau that which has just been concluded, the subjects being of a more* practical and useful class. We trust that the results of the 1877 examinations will' be far, more satisfactory than . they have been this year. A keport of the Caledonian Sports recently held at Motueka will be. found in the ■'* -fourth page of the present issue. ' ... Mr. A. McGeb announces, that Calcutta sweeps pu the principal events of the Auckland races; to be run on Monday next will take place* at the Nelson Hotel this evening at. 9 o'clock. The sound of a horse's feet at full gallop, and of the wheels of : a dray travelling at an unusual pace yesterday afternoon, induced many people in the shops and houses in ' Hardy and Trafalgar streets to step out to see what was the matter. . The runaway was * the property of Mr T. Harley, aud, from the course he was steering, appeared to be making [ for the half-tid& road or thereabouts, when a collision between one of the wheels behind him .and Mr Harling's verandah post induced him to tljinfe better of it. The post t was smashed, but the horse And cart appeared to be none the worse for thpir rapid travelling or the sudden check they received. [ • Tbb Nelson School Society's annual treat, .which, took , place, . yesterday afternoon, ■" ' appeared, to be greatly enjoyed by the child-' • reu who at 5 o'clock assembled in large numbers in Mr Campbell's paddock, where, after l playing about for some time, they were served , ' with tea and all manner of good things in . the way of eatables, after which they adf jjourned to the school room, where the : numerous prizes, with which the Christmas Tree was Jaden, were distributed. Hymns were suag, and delivered by the , l.evs. J. Leighton and J. Beckenham, and . the merry party broke up, all delighted with the treat provided for them by the kindness . of their teachers. j ».' :Mr. Wallis, the Superintendent of the I Motueka Orphanage, writes to us as follows: — "ln.yie. multiplicity of gifts apd prizes r no*., being, distributed, the Orphanage has. . come in for jts share through the liberality of our lady friends in Nelson,- which the i workers and the happy children here desire t through the EyjsNj.No Maji_ gratefullv to ac- -■ knowledge. The presentation, which took j place pn Wednesday iu the presence of a . few kindly well wishers; afforded much satisfaction' to all who were present. An addition o * books was likewise made to the children's librarv" wWch nmv contains abput 200 volumes w Mch ' in ;iuslice to the lady who has^g^tly in^r" 9 *. , in th f e wel " i-re of the Orphanage, u > fe *? Mr. Mackat, of the Nelson College, who in conjunction with Mr Hodgson, undertook the examination for the Provincial and Governors'Scholarships this ye-«^ his intefct'on of devpting his examiner's fee '. of £2 2s: .to the purchase of .two -prizes for.the best: of the unsuccessful candidates, : namely, Hunt; Of 88 Valley^and'Ballard of : ' Motueka. We have great pleasured recording this act of generosity. The sporting correspondent of the Evening Pott writes as follows re the Intcrprovincial Regatta:— For the pairs there ought to be five; or;six entries. Great uncertainty exists as to the class of boats to be used. The programme states "no restriction," but it would be manifestly unfair to row au outrigged .against an inrigged boat. The latter seems to be the intention of the committee, as I see Taylor has just turned out an inrigged pair and I think they would be inclined to encourage rather than discourage local talent. The point ought to be settled sq.that crews may know for a certainty whether they can compete, in order that, active practice may be commenced. The Ycommittee have throwiropen tbe schliers race to all- comers, I believe i at the suggestion of the Star Club. This will prevent the 'feeling pf exclusiveness, which otherwise would arise, from destroying the harmony of the meeting. The meeting promises to be the most successful yet held." Y\ , ■..
