These sports came off on Boxiog a Day on the Motueka Cricket Ground, t and pVbved a mb et defli*_ed success, a , large number of people 1 being ou the j ground who appeared to thoroughly t enjoy themselves. i The judges were Messrs Duncan, j Tarrant, and Alexander White. The { following is the programme, with the t names of the winners of tho various ( events : — < One Kmdred Yards Flat Bace. — ( A. Ruß_, first prize, 10a; M. Simpson, } second prize, ss. 1 Mtiiining Hiyh Leap. — E. Arnold, ( sft 4tn, first prize, 10a j F. Rofis, , second -prise, os. { Quarter-mile Flat Race. — F. Russ, , firbi'pria., 20o.; A Line, sec«>n.i | prize, 10.. There were several other entries, but the race was between , Rubs and Lines, and had tbe Utter put on. his final spurt a second or two sooner, he would probably have taken first' mooey. Putting the Stone. — Ten entries. George Jennings again proved too good for the other competitors, getting the stone away 28ft Uio, Harkness obtaining second place at 27ft 2|in. Firai prize, IS?{ second, 7s 6d. Hop, Step, and Jump.— Six entries. This event occupied a Song time, E. Arnold aod C. Brougham! being very evehly matched ; the former managing at last to take the prise at 37f( 4in, and the latter the second, at 37ftThree Legged Race for Soys under 14 ''years of age. — This was a most amusing race, and was won by Harry Debloise (half-caste) aod Harry Selwyn (Maori), the result appearing to give gre-tf satisfaction to the Maori spectators. Throwing the Cricket Ball.— Nine entries, lhe champion tbrower, Geo. Duncan, after overstepping the mark twice, managed to get the ball away 92 yards, winning the first prize, lOs, Henry Fry being close behind at 91 yarde. Half-mile Race.— This was amost exciting race, and the finish was all that could be desired; Charles Brougham winning first prize, 80s; A. Russ, close up, second prize, 15-. Time, 2min lSsccs. Vaulting with Pole. — The champion vauiter, E. Arnold, was required to vault Gin higher than any other competitor; tbis he did easily, Kima (Maori) the next to him, managing only Bft 9.n. First prize, 20-, seoond prize, 10s. One Hundred Yards Flat Race for Roys under 14 years of age.— J. M .c---iarlani.. first prize, ss. Sack Race. — This race created great fuo, the Motueka champion, Edward Brougham, taking first prize, 15a, Edward Fearon, a good second, 7s 6d. Race, 200 yards.— -Foor entries.— F. Rubs, first prize, 30s; M. •Simpson, 15.. Time, 45_eos. Tossing the Oaber. — The contest for this eveni lasted a considerable time, F. Stone eventually winning the prize, 20s. Mile Race. — This was expected to be tbe race of the day, but there were only three entries, one of whom, H. Haycock, collapsed, after running three quarters of a mile, leaving the race to A. Lines aod F. Russ, who kept close together until the seventh I_p, when Lines put on a spurt, passed Russ, aod came in the winner. Ruse, after being, paeeed, walked ia for second moa-ay. Time, Srasa I4_ecs. First priszt*, 40s; second priz?, 20 j . Runnina Flat Leap. — This .event was well contested, __). Arnold ultimately winning first prize, 10s; H. HnvcntT-k st* oon 1 orize, ss. Maori Race — 440 yards. — Four entries This was also a very amusing raco, and was won by Will-are., whose style of runoing was much admired. Old Man's Race— loo yards.— Three entries. The winner of last year, Jarne . WilUie, won tbis race as he liked; B. Bullen, the second man, taking tbe wrong direction, and _1.0 falling, left fittlefor Wilkie to do. The sun proved too hot for the third man, causing him to lake a reßt when about one-third pi the distance. First prize, 15s; second prize, 7s 6d. Tilting at the Ring,— Seventeen entries; 220 yards; time,3osecß; three limes round. A. Wilkie and G. Duncan each managed to get 9 rings out of a possible 18. In running tbe tie off, ouce round, A. Wilkie took 5 rings out of a possible 6, and G. Duncan only 2, Wilkie thus taking first prize 40s, G. Doncan second prize, 20s. This event brought the day's sporte to a conclusion. Great credit is due tc the Stewards, aod also to the indefatigable starter, Mr Cbarles McFarlane, fot tbe able manner in which everything was carried out, nor must HostDalaney ofthe Swan Inn, be forgotten, wh< supplied a most recberche lunch on the grouud, with all the delicacies of th< season. Tbe Waimea West Baud wai ia attendance, which added much to tht -lay's enjoyment.
