FATAL ACCIDENT.

An accident, which we regret to learn has terminated fatally, occurred this morning to Mr Marsden, senior, of Stoke. He and Mrs Marsden were driving into town in their pony carriage, but. just before arriving at the railway crossing at Jenkins' Hill Mrs Marsden got out. Just then the whistle of the engine on leaving the Bishopdale station was blown, which frightened the horse, and he started off at a galop. On descending the hill and when near the gate leading to the station tbe horse darted off the road, and rolled over down a steep bank. Mr Good and a party of men who had just arrived by the train from Nelson seeing the accident went to see if they could render any assistance. They found Mr Marsden sitting up, and he got up and moved about, and in reply to his wife, who came up shortly after, said that he waa not hurt. He then, with the assistance of Mr Good, unharnessed the horse, and led it to the Bishopdale stable. The men then went to their work up the hill, and iv a few minutes Mrs Marsden went and asked Mr Good to allow his carter to take some small parcels into town, as she and her husband intended to walk in. The carter went at once down to the stable, and found Mr Marsden lying on the ground near the door. With the assistance of the Bishop's servant he moved him on to the grass, but he never moved or spoke afterwards, indeed, it is believed that he was dead when first found lying on the ground. An inquest is to be held.
