While in Nelson the - Maori was visited T>y several dusky brethren, who looked upon him as a hero, inasmuch as he s yvA^ the first Maori that had ventured home as a sailor, and to them he related in' graphic style the passage home, how he thought, when on the illimitable ocean, that he would never see land any more, and how he wai struck by the number of people in London., cpn the passage out he proved himself quite an adept sailor, and although he was never sent up aloft above the topsail yard, he was as smart as any man in the ship. In paying a farewell visit to his friends here he stayed rather long, and on going down to the wharf was surprised to find the Helen Denny outside the Boulder Bank, and what grieved him more,' four months pay irrevocably lost. But John was not to be daunted, and next day he shipped on board the Lochnagar, and on arrival at Poverty Bay will proceed to Napier, where he will remain for the present, as he says that he is quite satisfied with one deep sea voyage.
