The Coromandel Mail, referring to an • agreement amongst the bakers of Coromandel to raise the price of bread to s£d for the twopound loaf, says: — "This is a very serious offence against the law, aud which subjects offenders .proved guilty to from one to five : years' iraprisonraeut. Let it be understood ; that a baker may make whatever charge he likes for his loaves of bread. There is no law against this, but there is a very strict law against ' conspiring to combine ' in order to an increased exaction. If people refuse to ' , pay the s£d wbich the baker may be rash enough to charge, we feel quite sure the , bakers will not jeopardise their liberty by i trying to enforce the charge.'*
