Tuesday. At a meeting of the Wellington Jockey Club, last night, a resolution was passed £hafc tbe nominations for the Wellington Derby for 1878 and 1879 should be received up to 8 p."m. at tbe Empire Hotel on February 12th 1877.
The Times thia morning reprobates in very strong terms handing over the provincial library to the Canterbury College. Inter alia it says " We hope the proper authorities will not allow a valuable library, which certainly was and still is public property, to be coolly handed over to the private use of an already most unjustly favored institution for rich people." ' Dunedin, Monday. ihe Provincial Library is to be handed over to the University. A conference in regard to railway management is be held. Mr Charles Bright commences his second lecture season on Wednesday. Two case's of scarlet fever have occurred to mothers of children upon whom they had been in attendance. Chrisxchukcu, Monday. Ihe shearers difficulty is likely to be satisfactorily settled. Now men are going to work freely at 16s and 16s 8d per hundred. Iv oue instance some of the men have been ill-used by those who are standing out for higher rates. The local Board of Health held their first meeting to-day. Members seem determined to take strong measures for carrying out the provisions of the Act. Auckland, Monday. The Suwarrow case will come before the Civil Courts. Dr Gould, for larceny as a bailee, was sentenced to four months' imprisonment with hard labor. * An inquiry in re fire in Shortland-streeL was commenced to-day. Sailed— Ladybird, at 11.30 a.m. Passengers for Nelson— Messrs Bodle and Booth. Letters to the agent of the Georgia Minstrels shew that, owing to the excellent business doing in San Francisco, ie has been decided to remain there until next mail. A person named Corbyn, agent for John Bennett, Sydney, look advantage of this to engage ten non-fessional darkies for Sydney, and ship them as Georgia Minstrels. They went up in the City of Sydney. Kirby agent here, is instructed to go to Sydney and expose them. The San Francisco Fast severely denounces the proceedings as a fraud. Letters from America in re Mail Service, are favorable to a permanent service, via Auckland. The following is an extract from a letter sent to the Auckland agents by a prominent official at head quarters. He says:—" We have heretofore given you our opinion at great length regarding the serious drawbacks to the prosperity of our line, which are due eutirely to the necesity imposed on us of running to ports where ships of such a class should never be sent We are sparing no exertion to have this corrected. As to calling at the Bay of Islands or have connection with that port, we are as strenuously opposed to it as we are to the present route. Our calling places should be Honolulu, Auckland, and Sydney, and all collateral business should be transacted separately and apart from our main line." Tuesday. The ss. Hero arrived at 6 p.m. yesterday. She left Sydney on the 27th.
