Sterndale, in a statement to the Evening Star, says that he was in sole charge and ma nagement of Sanwaroff, and wias responsible for the good order of the island; that he wai-ned Fernandez not to land without notice, as he desired; that the present breach of the peji,ce resulted "from Fernandez having quarrelled all round; that Henderson and Fernandez afterwards took forcible possession of the Island, aud beseiged Sterndale ani his wile for sixteen days; that he then went out to get water, and met Fernandez, who made a motion as- if toi raise his revolver, when Sterndale fired a carbine, and Fernandez fell on all fours, scrambled away and then ran. Fernandez applied for a warrant. Captain Fernandez's statement to the Star represents Sterndale sitting in state amongst natives in silver and' the New: Zealand military uniform; he had a small cast iron cannon, which was fired occasionally. Mair strutted about in pheasant feathers and a New Zealand war medal. During the fracas Mair stabbed Sterndale. Sterndale was arrested thiree times at Tahiti and fined 40 dollars by th3 French Government. The captain gives accounts of frequent brawls and affrays. Hendert, agent for Henderson and Macfarlane, proceeded to Auckland, whereupon Sterndale barricaded his house, and circumstances related in yesterday's telegram occurred. The island is only 140 acres in area. To-day the Resident Magistrate refused to issue a warrant on the captain's information on the ground of no jurisdiction. Sterndale now intends laying an information against Captain Fernandez. The body of a man aged 74, missing since last week was found to-day hanging on a tree in the domain, having committed suicide. Mr Buckland reports :— Fat cattle, 27s to 30s per iOOlbs; shorn sheep, 2-_- per lb; lambs, lis to 17s each. Mr Binney reports :— Adelaide flour, £18 per ton, Star £17, supernre £16; sharps, £8 10s; bran, £7; cheese, 8d to 9d; bacon, -8d to lOd; barley, 3s 6d; oatmeal, £12; jams, 7s 9d.
