The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1876.
The City Surveyor's report on the Waimea street sewer discloses a most serious, although not altogether unexpected, state of things. It was illustrated by a plan showing the various levels, and anything more disgraceful it is impossible to conceive. From I
Patterson's corner to the mouth the sewer presents one long wavy line, the highest point, some nine inches above the level at the outlet; being about three chains from the mouth. From thence to Patterson's corner there is a drop, and in some places there are hollows of three, five, s_ven, thirteen, and so on up to sixteen inches in depth. These are filled with silt, which in some spots is hard enough to bear a man's weight, and in others is in a semi-liquid state. In the Hardy-street sewer at its junction with this Waimea-street bungle is a mass of filth and silt varying from 16 to 19 inches in depth, and there is little probability of this being got rid of so long as that rise near the mouth backs up the contents of the drain, and prevents its outflow. It is quite clear that if the Waimea-street sewer is ever to he of any use it must he taken up and rebuilt, for in its present condition it would be as reasonable to expect it to act as to suppose that a river could flow upwards from its mouth to its source. The City Council acted wisely in rejecting all propositions to combine other duties, with those of Inspector of Nuisances, for there can he little doubt that the new officer, whoever he may be, will, if he conscientiously aud thoroughly performs his work, find plenty to do in that particular line without having to go outside to seek occupation. We are inclined to think that the salary offered is not sufficiently large, for it must be remembered that in more ways than one the office will not be a desirable or a pleasant one. If the man does his work as it should he done, he is sure, at all events-at first, to give great offence and to create many enemies. This will be taken into consideration by those who may think of applying for the office, and, as a set-off to its drawbacks, it would, we think, have been wise to offer some greater inducement to reliable and trustworthy men to accept its responsibilities. The sooner such an officer is appointed and commences his duties the better, for to our own knowledge there are at present existing i_ more places than one in the town nuisances that are simply intolerable. With to-morrow's issue of the Ev_hin_ Mail will be published a supplement, containg fourteen columns of closely-printed reading matter. The "Novelist" tells two tales, one entitled "Following Down the Lava," and the other " May Perrian." The "Sketcher" gives an account of one of Juggernaut's processions, an article on "Women in Bulgaria," and an extract referring to " Muscular Christians." The "Naturalist" has something to say about sharks. Under the head "The Family Circle," will be found some useful receipt., and humorous stories, scraps of fun and a few miscellaneous paragraphs complete the list. A Napier telegram to the Post of Wednesday says -—The Hon Mr Ormondis prepared to leave to join the Ministry as soon as the Hinemoa brings up Sir D. M'Lean. Sir Donald has taken Mr Ormond's town residence. Semiofficially, it is stated that Mr Ormond will take the Native Minister, port-folio, and will divide the North Island into four native districts, each presided over by an. official through whom all official communications must pass, and by them be forwarded to the Native Minister, whose title would likely be changed to Minister of the Interior.
