The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 1876.
In this morning's Colonist a leading article is devoted to a coarse personal attack upon Mr Oliver for the address recently delivered by him at the Tadmor, and published in the Mail on Monday last. The speech was of course fairly open to temperate criticism, but it is intolerable that a citizen who avails himself of an opportunity of expressing his views on the leading questions of tke day should be exposed to such a torrent of abuse as that which disgrac*3 the columns of our ill-tempered contemporary. Elsewhere appears a telegram purporting to give a list of the Counties and Hidings i in the Nelson district, but without any inf or- I mation as to the boundaries of the latter, it is impossible to form an opinion as to the fairness of the divisions. Judging from the telegram as it appears we are inclined to think that it is imperfect and unreliable A missionary service is to be held at Christ Chnrch this evening at half-past 7, this being the day appointed by the Church of England for intercession for missions and missionaries throughout the world. After the service a lecture will be delivered by the liev J. Leighton on " The spread of Christianity among the upper classes of India*" We publish to-day the evidence of Capt. Nelson of the barquentine Annie S. Hall and others, in the case of Bacheldcr v. Nelson, which was taken at Christchurch. Besides the cricketers .there were but very few passengers. Ihb Horticultural Show was not so crowded last night as on the previous evening, nevertheless there was a very Rood attendance, the,Hall befog comfortably filled. The suggestion has been made, and we refer it to the Committee for consideration, that an intermediate show should be held in about six weeks time, when, among flowers, the annuals, which are too late for the spring and too early for the autumn show, would form exceedingly pretty and attractive exhibits, and among fruits, the raspberries, early plums, nectarines, apricots, &c.
