As the time for the Horticultural Society's spring show approaches we would venture to make the suggestion to the ladies of Nelson that they should do as we notice is done by many ladies in the other towns in the colony where similar shows are held, namely, offer special prizes |pr special descriptions of flowers or fruits. In this way the number of exhibits would be largely increased, and as a consequence the attractions of and interest taken in the show also. Calcutta sweeps on the racing events at Christchurch to-morrow will be held at the Nelson Hotel this evening. Mr. Kohler, who plays on the " Tutnbleronicon " in addition to almost every other known instrument, together with Horace Bent, "the inimitable," will appear afc the Masonic Hall tonight, and give an entertainment that is characterised as one of the most enjoyable that can be conceived. The train which left town for the other terminus at 930 this morning was literally crammed, the greater part of the four carriages and eight trucks of svhich it consisted being occupied twenty minutes before the advertised time for leaving. Among the passengers was a crowd of the children at. tending the Temperance Hall Sunday School; who are to picnic in Mr Kinzettfs bush at Wakefield. A comparison of the times in which the principal events atthe current Metropolitan Eace Meeting were run with those of last year tells considerably ih favor of the former. Last year the Derby, won by Mr Campbell's Daniel O'Kourke was run in 2m in. sosecs.; this year Mr Eedwood's Songster accomplished the distance in 2miu, 52^-secs. Last year Mr Lunn's Nectar won the C.J.C. Handicap in 3min. 57isecs ; this year Mr Eedwood's Guy Fawkes showed up at fche winning-post in 3tnin. 50|secs. Las year the Cup was won by Daniel. .O'Kourke in 4min. 18Jsecs.; this year by Guy Fawkes in 4 mm. IG^secs. The members of the a aval Brigade met afc their boat shed last evening, and embarked in the Aurora. After taking a turn, round the harbor the Aurora was run alongside the Hinemoa, where due respect was paid to his Excellency the Governor. The company did not starfc for Motueka last evening as was intended, the cfew not turning up. The Post of Friday last had a notice of the. first green peas of the season, which ifc pronounced a splendid sample. They were Nelson grown. Tub Knight of the Rueful Countenance was probably a victim of the depression, irritability and causeless apprehensiou which are symptomatic of confirmed dyspepsia. There are many such knights whose days are undoubtedly shortened by the misery of body and mind produced by that harassing disease.
