The Wellington, " with the San Francisco mail, will ai-rive to-night, and sail, for the South to-morrow morning. -'" The Charles Edward will leave for West Coast ports immediately oa the arrival of the Wellington to-night. , . The Hawea sailed for the North at- 10.30 last night. The Alhambra was due at Hokitika to-day, but. up to' the time of our going to press her arrival was uofc notified on the West Coast. The cutter Maid of Italy arrived from Riwaka last evening. The schooner Bisters arrived f roin-Motu-pipi last evening, The Pearl, which has taken up the Lady Barkly's running, while that steamer is laid up, took ,her , departure for Waitapu aud Collingwood last evening. What appears to have been a very exciting race took place between the steamers Otago and Hawea between Port Chalmers and Lytteltou last week. The Otago was four miles away when the Hawea left the wharf at Port Chalmers. ..The wind was blowing dead aft at the tiinje, , and both steamers set every available 'stitch of canvas'.' The position of the steamers remained unchanged for. a short time, but the wind having taken off a little the Hawea slowly began to overhaul her opponent, uutil both vessels were abreast of one another. The race was now exciting, and the two steamers began to fire up vigor-ously,"-the firemen of the Olago being served, with grog. Just then the wind freshened and the' Otago ouce more went ahead, keeping the lead until rounding the Heads at Lytteltou, followed very closely by the liawea! Tie' same steamers also had a trial oil spee.ij between Lytteltou and Wellington, bat it' resulted in favor of the New Zealand \> jat, which won by ten minutes. Tne Aiaus of Saturday says : — .The Hinemoa made, a smart trip .down to Otiigo aud back. j^She left here on Tuesday night aud was back' early yesterday afternoon, having called at. Lytteltou ou her way down. Including' stoppages, she averaged ten knots and four-tenths of a kcot per hour from departufe* to return, aiiu the whole 700 miles was done with an expenditure of only 4o" tons ofVcoal. The passage ■ from Port Chalniurs here' only occupied 28% hours. : Captain Johnston certainly made a tine trip. How siucere was the regard and esteem in which.., Captain Carey, late of the steamer We'lington, was held by his -officers aud crow, 'may, says the Otago Daby Times, be inferred from the fact of a substantial sum of money having been subscribed by them to foe expended at Dunedin in the purchase of a handsome silver tea and coffee service, for presentation to Captain Carey at the earliest -opportunity.
