At the -Resident Magistrate's Court at Spring Grove to-day, Lawrence Dron was fined £1 and costs £1 16s for assaulting John Palmer, or in default seven days imprisonment. Having made the mental calculation that £2 16s for seven days was qqual to eight shilliugs a day, a rate of wage not easily obtainable in these dull times, Mr Dron elected to " take it out," and in consequence was a free passenger by the afternoon train eh route to her Majesty's gaol in Nelson. St. Mary's Church was,' at evening service, yesterday, lighted for the first time with gas. The fittings are neat and tasteful, and have been, successfully placed in position by Mr A. M'Artney. Bachelder's Pantascope will remain on exhibition for two nights longer, when gifts of considerable value will be presented. His Excellency the Marquis of Normanby and Lady Normanby arrived by the Hinemoa this morning, and drove to Mr W. Oldham's to lunch. Duringtheir stay in Nelson, which will probably last until the end of the week, they will make the steamer their home. Mr. A. M'Gee's sweep on the Christchurch Derby (to be run to-morrow) will take place at the Nelson Hotel to-night, to be followed by Calcutta sweeps on the Canterbury Cup and the other principal events of the meeting. At a meeting of the members of the Stoke Rifles, held at the Public ' Hall on Saturday evening last, it was decided to have a rifle match between the married and single members of the company on Thursday next. At the conclusion of the- meeting Pvt. Martin, who is leaving the colony, was presented with a gold Albert chain and locket, as a mark of the esteem in which he is held by the members of the company. The locket bore the following inscription: — -'Presented to Pvt. G. F. Martin by the Stoke Eifles, 1576." Private Martin thanked the company in suitable terms.
