_. . Auckland, Friday. On landing Sir George Grey was presented with an address of welcome by the Onehunga Town Board. A drenching rain prevented any demonstration, and he was driven into town in a carriage provided by the Reception Committee. He promised a full exposition of his viow9 at a public meeting in the theatre to-night. The Grahamstown friends and supporters of Mr William Kowe, M.H.R. last night decided to give him a banquet on his return from Wellington. Arrived—Ship Orari, from London immigrants all well. Di'XEDijf, Friday. Ihe Good Templars hold a monster demonstration on the 9th. The Otago Art Society's Exhibition opens to-day. The Political Association have deemed it inadvisable to hold another public meeting prior to the meeting of convention. The now cranes imported by the Harbor Board are found perfectly worthless. Mr Beetham, Warden at Wakatip, has been appointed to the Magistracy of Napier. One hundred Victorian shearers have arrived. The National Marine Insurance Office of Adelaide have handed over £500 to the owners of the Czarewitch. Yesterday Mr G. M'Lean and Mr Macandrew had an interview, but nothing was definitely settled, and another meeting is proposed for to-morrow. Mr M'Lean also met the individual members of the Executive. His endeavor is to obtain the assistance of the Provincial Government to carry out the affairs of the province as hitherto until the election of County Councillors, which, it is hoped, will take place in the middle of December. Mr M'Lean states that nothing definite has been done, but a general desire is expressed to facilitate matters so that the public may not be inconvenienced. The Sandhurst Fire Brigade have notified their intention of competing at the brigade demonstration. Auckland has intimated a probable intention also. New Plymouth, Friday. Mr Courtney reports:— At the cattle sale yesterday, 48 head were yarded, and sold at high rates. Yearlings, £2 15s to £3 12s sd; steers, £5 7s 6d to £7 12s sd: cows, £6 to £7 ss; lambs, Gs2d each; store ewes, 9s to 11s. Wellington. Friday. A Gazette published this morning notifies that Thursday next, the 9th iust, being the birth day of H.R.H. Prince of Wales, will be observed as a public holiday in honor of the occasion, and the departments of the General Government will be closed accordingly with the exception of the Customs, Post Office, lelegraph, and Railway Offices. Tile Agnes arrived from Sydney to-day, to lay the Cook Straits second cable. The St. Leonard arrived from London after a fine weather passage of 102 days. She brings the five miles required to complete the Cook Straits cable, 44 cabin and 11 steerage passengers, also some prize pigs and valuable rams. fin ± . Saturday.
