Mr P. J. MantoD, the mining mana. ger of the Mount Eangitoto Silver Mine, in a report to the directors of the company, estimates the quantity of ore actually available at the present time at 1741 tons, and congratulates the company upon "the magnificent appearance of the mine."
Mr Swanson, M.H.TJ., gave expression to a novel sentiment recently, on the question of prison management and discipline. He said he would prefer criminals being made to do so much work rather than perform a certain term of imprisonment, and would say to them — " There 13 your pile of stones; pick away at them till you get out." The mineralogieal history of the West Coast (says the Kumara Times) is only in its infancy. With its silver and lead mines in the soufch, its alluvial auriferous deposits spread in every direction, more or less rich, its valuable quartz reefs and inexhaustible coal supply, its limestone ranges, what is there to prevent the West Coast becoming the great mining centre of the eouthp We have therefore much cause for congratulation in the present and future aspect of the West Coast.
