This is what the Wairarapa Stand cerd.eays of the condition of the labor market in that district: — For several days in succession we have met firßtclosa working men, judging from thbir appearance, seeking employment and finding noue. This is a somewhat remarkable circumstance at this season of the year, Oae man told us that alI though las; year he had earned 7a per day, he would be glad to accept 03, per tiay now. A youDg Warwickshire firm laborer, n superior man of his class, (old us he would be glad to accept 15s. a week if he could ensure regular employment. These facts speak for themselves, aud indicate a very great change in the state of the labor maiket, compared with the corresponding period of last year. A mun recently " stuck up " a Mr at Wuipukurau, and oriiere.l him "to stand and deliver," The would-be robber, however, had no pistol. Mr Sim, who was on horseback, unhitched a stirrup-iron and leather, and " went for" the bold highwayman. There was heard for sooae minutes the crack of iron and leather as it impinged oo humau fleah, and then the highwayman fled bruised and battered all over, a sad aud subdued man. He will not try stickle-up agwn in a hurry.— Post. They bottomed yesterday, with six feet of wash, averaging from one to sis grains per disb. — To the west of the Lucky Hit, two claims from O'Connor's, Mulling and party struck the wash in a hollow at a depth of only 26h, averaging from two to three grains to the dish. Biggs and party, to the south of Mullius' claim, struck the wash this morning at a depth of 42ft, and obtained a prospect of one grain to the dish. — Mitchell and party, two claims to tl.e south of the Lucky Hit, were down 22ft, and expect to bottom next Wdck.— Donrolly ami party,' the adjoiuiujr claim to Mitchell's, are still d"ivicr, but have struck nothing payab:s.—Cunn n 4 ;ham anJ party, next to t!ie last-raue.J claim, are down 52ft, ami on the wash, bat at the present d-pth do not consider it payable. A number of members of the General Assembly left by the Hawea and Tuapo oa Saturday night, and celebrated their departure in a manner quite worthy of the Parliamentary session at which they have assisted. On passing the Ciub House, towards midnight | unwonted eouncisof revelry were heard to proceed from the interior of that ordinarily Btajd Hn j respectable estabj lisiiineut. A little later the uproar reiched a elhnax, and the noisy troop, among whom were to be recognised the departing members and many of those wi)O were stayiug behiod, issued from tha entrance, and proceeded in procession aloocr the beach and down to the wharf, chaniiog in vociferous tones " Julin Browo's body lies mouldering in the grave, but we go marching on," with a stentorian refrain of "Glory Hullelujah," and a deafening instrumental accompaniment consisting of kerosene lius and penny whistles. "John Brown" at last grew monotonous and the " Marsellaise " was attempted but failed ignominiousiy By this time tha wharf was reached, nnd successive bacchanalian meetings were held ou board the Hawea ami Taupo, "AuldL.nt,' Svne," and "We won't go home till morning " being declaimej with powerful en^ot, intertpersed with cheers for everybody and nobody in particular. A Maori man and his sister made their appearance at the Resident Magis train's Court, yesterday. The former was charged with having been intoxicated and disorderly; the latter with having at the Hint, assaulted Constable Stewart. The case was amusing. The mule Maori, it appeared, had conducted himself effusively, aud evinced a thorough contempt of English law, and exercised his powers of spenkiog the English language in conveying the intelligence that he did uot care an m.'jeetive morsel for the best policemao that could be produced. After Borne trouble, and with the assistance of some civilians, ho was takeu ioto custody, as also was his amiable sister, who assaulted Constable Stewart with an unbrella, and carressed him on the shoulder with her teetb. The defendants were each fined 5a and costs, with the alternative of twenty-four hours' 1 imprisonment. The Qoes were paid.
