CITY COUNCIL.

An extraordinary meeting of th«" City Council was held last night, Present, all the members except Cr. Waters. The following tenders for building the dam were received:— 11. Carter, _2-)6; J. Scott, £475 ; Lloyd and Patterson, £409. The first named was accepted. Cr. Levien moved that the resolution for forming the half-tide road round the Hocks be rescinded. He did so because he thought ! it a mistake to spend a large sum of money on a special work that would only benefit a fcu-; because at the time of its adoption the Finance Committee had not reported and they were not aware of the low ebb at which their finances had arrived; and because there was not a full Council at the time the vote was passed. Cr. T. Harley moved as au amendment that the consideration of the question be deferred until next meeting. Cr. J. Harley seconded the amendment and spoke in high terms of the advantages to be derived from the. proposed road, chief among which was the facility it would afford for obtaining good metal. The amendment was here put and lost. Cr. Webb repeated his former objections to the formation of the road. Cr. Gray did not consider the supply of gravel a sufficient inducement for making what would be a most dangerous road. Cr. Pickering did not think the present time to be an opportune one for making the road. At this stage of the proceedings Cr. T. Harley, seeing that his case was hopeless, left tbe Chamber. His Worship the Mayor had supported the resolution when it was first brought forward, and should still do so. He thought the advantages of opening the road would outweigh any objections that had been raised against Cr. Hooper did not believe in the road, and could not bring himself to voU for it. Cr. Levicn's resolution was then put and carried by sto 2. Ayes : Crs. Levien, Webb, Hooper, Gray, and Pickering. Noes : His Worship the Mayor, Cr, J. Harley. | The Council then adjourned. (
