Invercargill, Tuesday. In compliance with a requisition from a number of citizens, the Mayor has proclaimed Wednesday, the day on which abolition is , expected to come into force, a holiday. Arrangements are being made for a display of fireworks in the evening. Wellington, Monday. lhe Defence Minister ha9 decided that the next Colonial prize firing shall take place at Hokitika. The Wellington Tramway Company have issued a prospectus to-day, capital £40,000, m £5 shares. The New Zealand Shipping Company gave a lunch to some 200 people to-day, on board their ship Waikato. The Hon. Mr Pharazyn presided, assisted by Mr Smith, the General Manager, and it was a great success. Auckland, Monday. Advices per Hero state that on the arrival of the Llewellyn iv Sydney, the crew were paid off. the vessel was laid up, and advertised to be sold, but the sale was postponed. Captain Lodder remained at Sydney to superintend the sale. The American barque Europe, bound from Baker's Island for Cork, put in here to-day, having sprung a leak on the night of the 14th instant, and was making 16 inches of water per hour. Tuesday. Nominations for the Wellington Cup and Derby close^on Friday next at 8 p.m. Dunedin, Monday. Owing to the long spell of dry weather, . much sickness and great inconvenience is felt. Three thousand people visited the Ocean Beach by rail yesterday. Mr Musgrave, and Mrs Hall and daughter left to-day to join Hoskins' Company. Mrs Byers comes here. There are twenty-five entries for the Bilver cup chess match. The sixth half-yearly meeting of the X i f : ~nal Insurance Company is to be held on the 13th of November. From the report to be submitted.it appears that the total receipts for the half year (iucluding £6563 6s ld carried forward from previous balance) have been £5 1,890 10s 9d; expenditure for same period, £38,461, leaving for distribution the sum of £13,428 13s Bd. This sum the Directors recommend should be appropriated as follows:—To payment of dividend at the rate of 20 per cent, per annum, £5000; to be carried forward to next half year, £8428 18s Bd. Provision has been made in the accounts for £7856 14s 6d unadjusted losses; also, re-in-surance in the marine department, and all known liabilities at date of closing the books, which have been duly carried to profit and loss account. Owing to the heavy losses, the Directors are unable to recommend that any sum be carried to the reserve fund at this balance. Auckland, Monday. Madame Panzene. the great byciclist arrived per Hero. A rifle match between the Victoria Volunteer Company aud a team from H.M.S. Sapphire came off to-day. The former won at each range by several points. l.ichard Joshua Debeney charged with embezzlement, was brought up to-day and remanded. The defalcations are believed to amount to £150. Eobert Mcc, charged with an indecent assault on a child was discharged. The Diocesan Synod was opened to-day. Bishop Cowie delivered a long address, in which he referred to the approaching consecration of -the Rev. Mr Selwyn to the Bishopric of Melanesia He urged more energetic efforts in supporting the Home Mission Fund, and spoke hopefully of the prospects of obtaining clergymen for the colony from the ranks of young colonists. The rumor that BishoD Cowie haa been offered the Bishopric of Calcutta is contradicted. Ceristchurch, Tuesday The excess of the earnings of the Canterbury railways over the expenditure during the last six months is £20,000. The excess during the same period of 1875 was £17,000. The working expenses for the past six months were 70 per cent of the income.
