To the Editor of the ' Evening Mail.' Sir— My attention has been drawn to a statemeut in Hansard No. 28, on page 43, ;■• where Mr,;.Keunedy is reported to have in- :• formed the House of Assembly " That within the last three months our road's on the Nelsou ' South-West Goldfields have been completely , neglected... Previously.the province used to maintain the Grey Valley roads by annual .contracts,- but since no contracts for repairing the ro*.ds have been called for, and the consequence is that they have been allowed to fall into a state of great disrepair." Mr Kennedy is not one who should be lightly accused of making a wilful misstatement, so I presume he has been deceived, for the statement is not at all iv accord with the ' , facts. a_ the whole of the formed roads a*_, and have been, under maintenance contracts for the whole ' period mentioned, beside day : labor employed 'in. keeping passable the unmade portion of the road. Other contracts have also been let for some months past td make aud repair branch roads, notwithstanding the revenue from the Gi-ey Valley has become very inadequate to meet the requirements of the district. I am, &c, Eugene O'Conor, • ' Provincial Secretary. Nelson, Oct. 30, 1876. THE PROCEEDINGS OF SCHOOL • COMMITTEES. To the Editor of the 'Evening Mail.' Sir— A passage in one of your contemporaries in reference to Local Committees of Education "meddling and muddling" so strongly reminds me of a recent meeting of one of these Committees that I thought it wortli while immortalizing, by committing to print,-.he' following brief account of what totik. place on the occasion, leaviug out names of persons aud personalities:— Mr A. B. brought a series of .charges against the schoolmaster of "hitting the children with his fist," " knocking them off the forms ou to the floor," and "thrashing them with a ruler, and,. expressed his (A. B.s) opinion •of bis thorough unfitness for the office of schoolmaster. Mr C. D. was called to support the charge of thrashing' with the ruler, and stated that his boy had been so thrashed, and expressed his displeasure at some members of the Committee doubting his statements. In answer to questions put to him, Mr C. D* admitted that there were no marks made oh 'his boy by the ruler, and that the boy was not hurt. Mr A. B. dropped the other charges aud stuck to this oue of thrashing with a ruler only, and on the evidenco I have detailed it was resolved— "That the master be requested not to thrash the children with a ruler." It appeared to me that the Committee might just as well have requested the master " not to cut the children's heads off." Considering that the educational district to which all this has reference was ne /er so much at peace, uever so free from petitions, memorials, complaints • and general disturbance as it is now aud has been for sone time past, this may, I think, ; truly be called " meddliug and muddling • with a .vengeance."— l am, & c., Memjbeh of School Committee.
