Auckland, Wednesday. Sailed— Ladybird. Passengers for Nelson : Messrs Bently and Lloyd. The missionary schooner Southern Cross has arrived from a cruise. The Rev Mr Selwyn was a passenger by her. She visited the Santa CruX Group, where tbe natives gave an account for the reason of the murder of Bishop Patteson. One native said he had warned the Bishop against going to Nakawa. The murder was perpetrated in revenge for an outrage by a labor vessel on a canoe, in which four natives were killed and four taken away. The Rev Father Paul's furniture has been agaiu seized for the Education Rate. Dunedin, Wednesday. J. M. Russel was charged to-day by Mr Smythies with perjury in 1867. There is no action yet with regard to the Yogel Testimonial. The Rev. G. Morricc, late of Napier, has accepted the unanimous call to the Presbyterian Church at Hokitika. Thursday. The following is a copy of a telegram sent by the Superintendent to the Governor: — "Duuedin, October 11th.— -I regret that by some inadvertence a copy of the following telegram sent by me to the Secretary of State for the Colonies was not forwarded to your Excellency, as intended, by the mail:— 'Dunedin, October Cth, 1876.— Right Hon. Secretary of State for tlie Colonies — (Urgent.) Abolition of Provinces Act passed last session by the General Assembly being forced into operation, notwithstanding the strenuous opposition of the people of Otago constituting about one-third of the population of the colony. Am advised said Act forced on Cap 02 of 32 Vie ultra vires. Have honor to suggest said Act be referred to her Majesty's Attorney-General with view to disallowance if void. Deep feeling wrong pervades province. Provincial Executive pressed to convene Provincial Council and assert political rights conferred by constitution.' — Jajles Macandrew."
