A race took place between the steamers Kennedy and Charles Edward. The Kennedy took her departure about 6.30, followed immediately by the latter boat, the former being at the time half way down the harbor. Both steamers were firing up vigorously, it being impossible at times to see their smokestacks. At dusk it appeared from the shore that the Kennedy was drawing slightly away from the Charles Edward. The latter was in fine trim, but the former was rather deep for racing. Considerable interest was taken in the race by a large number of people on the wharf, and bets were freely offered, as much as 5 to 1 being offered on the screw boat. The Kennedy arrived at Westport at 1 p.m. to-day, making a splendid run down in 184 hours.

The departure of the Charles Edward for Hokitika last evening, with passengers for the Kumara diggings, was witnessed by a number of people. Dancing was indulged in by the diggers on board to the music of a violin, and on passing the Ladybird, lying at the Commercial Wharf, they gave three cheers for that vessel, which had brought a number of them here.

The barque Annie S. Hall, from Mauritius, with a cargo of sugar for Messrs Sclanders and Co, is expected to arrive here at the cud of this month.
