Napier, Monday. At the Synod, to-day, Archdeacon Harper (Timaru) aud the Rev. E. C. Stuart (Sydney) were nominated to the vacant Bishopric of Waiapu. The choice fell upon Archdeacon Harper, who is elected if he will accept tho nomination. A uckland, Monday. Arrived — Thames. The Gas Company have reduced the price to 10s., in compliance with a memorial signed by I_o consumers, threatening to discontinue using gas unless a reduction was made. The J udge sentenced a man named Brierly to-day, for indecent assault on a married woman, to ten years imprisonment, aud two whippings. A warrant was issued at the Bay of Islands for the arrest of a man named Roderick Cane for administering noxious drugs to girls. Chkistceiukch, Monday. The Supreme Court sittings commenced to-day. There are ten cases for trial, the most important being one of murder. The others are light. Iu his address to the Grand Jury, the Judge said that at the next session he should take the opportunity of addressing them in reference to the progress of any changes in criminal law. Robert James Thompson who is undergoing a sentence of two years for forgery, was brought up under a writ of Habeas Corpus for a similar oti'ence; ho pleaded guilty, and sentence was deferred. His Honor made some very strong remarks in consequence of the prisoner being placed in the dock in prison clothes. Joseph Garrett, a iaa Carherry, was sentenced to fifteen years' pejial servitude for robbery wilh violence. Fred Hard}-, a new arrival from Sydney, received a sentence of six months for robbery from an immigrant ship on the passage out. Five other prisoners were acquitted, and only two remain to be tried, one of them being Alice Shcehau for wilful murder of her infant. In passing the sentence upon the 'slicker-up,' the Judge said this oll'ence was* next in degree to murder, and that he was determined the vices of the old country should not be introduced into New Zealand without severe punishments. The celebrated '* Dr. Turner," alius Osbaldistone, came out of gaol this morning, but was again immediately arrested for stealing a coat, and was remanded on his own recognizance. The horse show on Saturday was a great succg_.s. There were 08 entries, aud the stock generally was of a magnificent description. GiiETMOUTir, Tuesday. The Kumara Times cautions miners against coming there unless possessed of means to stand three months, as it takes that time alter striking the gold before tunnels can go in. About two thousand miners arc now supposed to be on gold, but the place is being overdone by business people and miners.
Hokitika, Tuesday. Boats were towed to the wharf yesterday for the first time for three months. Four were towed out yesterday, and the Lioness is still towing in. It is expected that all the boats will be towed in to-day. The Otiigo arrived from Sydney yesterday, and was tendered last night. She left on the 27th, and brings -10 diggers for the Kumara.
