INTERPROVINCIAL.
Auckland, Saturday. Mr Buckland reports:— Fat cattle, 26s to 30s per lOOlbs; sheep, 3£d per lb. Mr Binney reports as follows: — Flour, £12 15s to £13; bran, £6 10s; pollard, £6 10s; oatmeal, £13; pearl barley, £22; oats, 23 8d: potatoes, £4 os; cheese, 9d; butter, Is; hams and bacon, 10d; maize, 4s 6d.
Duxedix, Saturday. There has been a run to-day to make payment for the assessments on the runs, which fall due on October Ist. Nearly £50,000 is due to the Treasury from this source.
Air Bradshaw reports:— Sales, Colonial Bank. £4 11s 6d; National Bank, £3 10s; National Insurance, £1 5 s 6d; Standard Insurance, 12s 6d Buyers, Colonial Bank, £1 11s; South British Insurance, £2 17s; National Insurance, £1 ss; Mosgiel Woollen, £1 os.
The Provincial Executive yesterday had under consideration the resolution passed by the meeting at the princess on Wednesday urging that the Provincial Council should be called together for the purpose of taking the necessary legislative action to obtain a plebischum of the people. No definite resolution has been so far arrived at in the matter.
Wheat is out of the market, the quantity offering being very trifling aud quotations are unchanged: barley met with some enquiry during the week and sales were effected at up to 4s 6d for choice malting; oats are in excellent demand and all arriving move off freely at 2s to 2s 2d; for ordinary to prime ( feed, and 2s 3d for milling and seed samples.
Monday. At a meeting at Balclutha on Saturday night, the Mayor in the chair, 180 being present, the following resolution was carried without dissent :—" That this meeting, believing it to he^vltra vires for the General Assembly to pass a law having for its object the abolition of provincial institutions conferred upon the people by the Queen, and believing that a gross injustice would be inflicted upon this province were provincial institutions abolished in the manner proposed by the General Assembly, urge his Honor the Superintendent and the Executive forthwith to convene a meeting of the Provincial Council with a view to the necessary steps being taken to obtain a plebiscitum of the people, so as to ascertain their wishes in the matter, and that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Governor, to the Colonial Secretary, and to the Superintendent." At the conclusion of the meeting a Political Association was formed.
Pokt Chalmers Saturday. Arrived— Thomasina M'Lellin. She left London on June 3rd, and on August 17th discovered that the coals on board were heated. The sounding rod was put down and drawn after careful watch; found the heat increasing. Eight hundred kegs of gunpowder and a quantity of matches were amongst the cargo; preparations were made to throw it overboard. On the 2 1st August tacked ship and bore for Rio Janeiro, heat still increasing it was deemed expedient to jctson all powder. Anchored at Kio Janeiro on the 24th; held a survey, and in accordance discharged coals; found them much charred, and shifted general cargo; took in ballast and sailed on the voyage to New Zealand, arriving at Port Chalmers to-day. She brings 2,000 tons general cargo and 43 passengers. "Wellington, Saturday. The opening cricket match of the season was played this afternoon on the Basin Iteserve, an eleven of the General Assembly being opposed to the Wellington team. Wellington won the toss, and sent the Assembly team te the wickets. In the first innings they scored 50, and Wellington 55. In the second innings the Assembly teams were not so fortunate only making 29. Wellington pulled up upon them with the loss of three wickets, thus winning the match by one run and seven wickets to fall. The top scores were — Kennedy, for Wellington, 24; and Rees, M.11.X, 17. Kees' "lobs" were a great success, taking ten wicket out of thirteen, and had he been supported by a good field, the result of the match wontd have been different. Randal Johnston's bowling was very good but the ground militated against his chance of success. Captain Morris had charge of the I Assembly team, and Mr Worry was captain j of the Wellingtonians.
Mr O'Shea reports:— .Flour, £12 15s to -£13; oats, 2s, 2s 2d, and 2s 6d; maize, 4s; bran, Is Id to Is 2d; pollard, 7s to 8s; wheat no milling; chicken, 4s 6d; hams 9d to 10d; bacon, 6d to 8d; cheese, B£d to 9d; potatoes, £3 10s to £4.
Mr J. Tuubridge, who pluckily rescued the crew of the schooner Dagtnar recently, has been presented by the Government with a pair of binocular glasses. Monday. The new Government steam-yacht Hinernoa, from Glasgow via Suez Canal and Adelaide, arrived this morning, having left Adelaide on the 23rd ult.
The criminal sittings of the Supreme Court opened this morning. There are seven cases, the most serious being an attempt to commit an unnatural offence, rape, burglary, and cutting and wounding.
The Grand Jury found a true bill against Haughton. The Chief Justice ordered the rape case to be postponed for three months in consequence of the child being so young, and to enable her to be instructed as to the nature of an oath.
Yesterday an iron safe at the Government Buildings was broken open and robbed of over £100. The culprit is not yet discovered. CiiuiSTCHUJtcH, Monday. At two o'clock yesterday morning a cottage occupied by Mr Corr was destroyed by fire. Mr Corr was away at the time and the family narrowly escaped with their lives. The fire was caused through the explosion of a kerosene lamp after everybody was asleep. Koberts beat Weston by 148 points. He plays his last game in the province to-night at Lyttelton.
The Supreme Court commences to-day. There are ten cases for trial, the most important being one of murder. The others arc light.
EUROPEAN. London, September 10. A meeting was held at Guildhall yesterday to protest against the alleged atrocities by the Turkish forces in Bulgaria. The Lord Mayor presided. A large number of Russian volunteers, chiefly soldiers, are joining the Servian army. General Schernief has proclaimed Prince Milan King of Servia. The Sultan, on receiving the Austrian Ambassador, expressed a desire to close the war, so us to bring about reforms. The Kuglish cricketers are proceeding to Australia. They played eighteen men at Chichester before leaving, and beat them easily. Trieketfc has left London for Sydney via America, but will not row there. Wheat is unchanged.
