CRICKET MATCH.

NELSON COLLEGE V. MOTUEKA,

The first cricket match of the season was played at. Motueka on Saturday between the Nelson and Motueka Clubs. The Nelson lads started in the Lady Barkly at seven o'clock, and after a smooth pleasant passage, arrived at Motueka about 9. After a two hours' rest they repaired to the cricket ground, which in justice to Motueka it must be said was in very good order. Firth having won the toss for Nelson elected to go in first, he and Wilson taking the bat against the bowling of Delaney and Goodman. Firth soon began to score making very pretty cuts, but Delaney shortly took him, after scoring 7. J. M'Rae then went in, but was immediately caught by S, Peel; his brother took his place, but shared the same fate, for E. Parker caught him out very cleverly. Foy was the next in and he played a careful innings; shortly after he went in Wilson was bowled, by Delaney, when Hodgson took his place, and he and Foy made a stand, but not for long, for Hodgson was clean bowled by Goodman. Halliday took his place and displayed some really splendid play. Foy was soon after caught by Delaney, and the remaining four were quickly disposed of, not however, before the total of 46 was made; Halliday carrying his bat out after scoring 14. After a short spell Nelson took the field, Motueka sending in E. Parker and Pattie against the bowling of Halliday and Foy. The whole team, much to the surprise of the Nelson lads, were quickly disposed of for a total of only 28, leaving the College 18 ahead. Motueka, after an excellent lunch provided for both teams, again took the field; Nelson going in in the order named before against the same bowlers. The eleven were put out in about three quarters of an hour for the miserable score of 19, leaving Motueka 38 to win. Motueka again went in against the same bowlers, and immediately began knocking the bowling about. However, E. Parker, Pattie, and S. Peel were soon put out, but when Boyes made his appearance at the wickets it was a lively time for the fielders, he hitting three 3's in quick succession. Firth, after a time, wisely put "Wilson on to bowl in Foy's stead, and during his first over Fowler was very cleverly caught by Halliday; and in his second over Wilson bowled Boyes clean, but after that his bowling began to get knocked about, and Foy was put on again. However, the score gradually crept up until 32 was obtained with the loss of seven wickets. The play was now splendid, boih teams doing their utmost to win. But it was in vain that McFarlane, W. Pavker, and Delaney tried to stop H&lliday's magnificent bowling; it was much too good for them, and they had to succumb, Delaney being splendidly caught by Thompson. The total for Motueka when the last wicket fell was 60, leaving Nelson victorious by 5 runs. The bowling of Foy and Halliday, and the longstopping of Firth for Nelson were admirable. The fielding on both sides was all that could be desired, especially during the latter part of Motueka's last innings, when not a ball was " mulled "by Nelson. On the Motueka side Delaney's bowling was very good, especially in the second innings of Nelson; when every ball he delivered was dead on the wicket. Goodman's bowling was also very fair, he doing good service for bis side. The following are the scores: —
