To the Editor op the ' Evening Mail.' Sir, —l see by this morning's Times that some obscure scribbler has apparently been hired by interested parties to whitewash the memory of a gentleman of note, and has earned his money by producing a biography of tbat gentleman calculated to delude the inexperienced into a belief that he is a paragon of morality, a bright and shining conglomeration of assorted virtues. Had he confined himself to more truthful or rather feasible statements, he might have been tolerated. Perhaps he will explain the electioneering dodge and family clique, or whether certain properties will advance twenty-five per cent from the fact of a road round the port. To characterise this would be weak, and I do not hesitate to avow my unalterable belief that he is a gentleman to b; respected in his proper place, and also quote "Port Road's" assertion that this is only an electioneering dodge, but so weak that I hope that any just thinking mau may be able to see through it.—l am, &c, Anti-Humbug. Nelson, September 12.
