The gold cup manufactured to the order of Mr Joines Biackwodd, and presented by that gentleman to the Victoria Racing Club, as an addition to the rich money prize of the Melbourne Cup for November next, is now completed. Tbe Cup is of Etruscan shape, with two handles. On one side of thr body is a spirited representation of a horse race, with the grand stand and hill of Flemington course in the background. The opposite side of tbe body has a crimson enamelled garter, bearing the words *' Melbourne Cup, 1876," in gold, letters, and surrounds the space where will be engraved the inscription of the winner's Dame, &c. The remainder of the body is richly chased with bold Bcrolls and leaves. The two haudles are also similarly ornamented Tbe neck and base are fluted, and on the latter are placed festoons of flowers. Tbe lid is surmounted with figures of a horse and jockey; the modelling of the figured is especially good. The cup stands on a plinth of black wood, relieved with gold ornaments, and contains 30oz of 18-carat gold, and is 18in in height. Altogether it is a very handsome specimen of tbe goldsmith's art, and reflects great credit upon Messrs Walsh Bros., by whom it was designed and manufactured. — Australasian. The London papers announce a further extension of rapid transit in the city by the completion and opening for public traffic, on the sth April, of the East London railway, which is another of th"se gigantic underground enterprises for which the metropolis of England is so distinguished., Tbe most remarkable feature of this new work is the fact that a considerable portion of the iine is built un-ler water. Tbe commerce of tbe world may be said to float and navigate directly over a part of tbe roof of tbe tunnel, which extends south-easterly, from the Liverpool street station of the Great Eastern railway, passing directly under the warehouses and water basin of the London docks, thence under the embankmeot, across and under tbe Thames river, to the New Cross station of the | South-eastern railway, thus connecting all the roads named, and also the Loddon and Brighton and South London lines. At Shadwell and Whitechapel, magnificent stations, each 450 feet in j length, have been erected. The total | cost of this new line, which ia a little I less than six miles in length, has been £3,200,000. Of the advantageous nature of this line to the public the London papers say there is no doubt. That portion of the line under the Thames passes through the old Thames tuonel, built by the celebrated engineer, M.I. Brunei. This work was commenced in 1824, and opened for foot passengers in 1843, but never proved of much value to the public until brought into use several years ago as a railway tunnel. The masonry comprising this remarkable work ia 38ft wide and 22£ ft high, and was carried across underneath the bed of the river by means of a great Bhield, within which the masonry heading wos erected, aud the shield then pushed ahead step by step by jack screws, tbe'masonry being built up as fast as the shield advanced.
