CAPTAIN CAMPBELL WALKER.

The following letter from the Conservator of New Zaaland Forests appeared in the Otago Daily Times of •August 17: — Sir, — A friend has brought to my notice a statement which appeared in your columns on the Ist inst., relative to my appoinment to the office of " Conservator of New Zealand Forests." It is not customary in tbe school of public servants in which I have been brought up to pay any attention to remarks which may appear in the columns of local newspapers; but bb in this instanca the statements which you . have made might prejudice some of your readers agninst the leading statesman of the oolony— your present Premier—l deem it right to state publicly that they are false and entirely without foundation. I am not the author of " The Correct Card " nor of any work on whist, nor can I justly lay claim to " high attainments as a whist player.'" Sir Julius Yogel had no personal acquaintance or knowledge of me when he did me the honor of selecting me &i the best qualified forest officer available for the post of Conservator of State Forests in this colony, to which his Excellency the Governor has since been pleased to appoint me for one year, with the consent of the Governor of India, under whom I was serving in India when the offer was made to me. I am sure, sir, you will be glad of the opportunity which [ thus afford you of recalling your statements, with an apology for tbeir inaccuracy, and so doing justice to the Premier, of whose ability and disinterestedness in the conduct of public affairs, you, in common with all New Zealandere, are doubtless justly proud. I am, &c, J. Campbell Walker. Wellington, 10th August.
