At the close of the plaintiff's case, and before that for the defence was opened, Mr Adams agreed to accept a nonsuit. The third half-yearly meeting of the members of the Naval Brigade was held at the Custom House Hotel last evening. There was a large attendance of members, Lieutenant (hilly in the chair. The accounts for the past halfyear, duly audited, which showed the financial position of the company to be in a fair state, were read to the meeting by the Secretary, and adopted. The meeting then went into the subject of a summer uniform, tenders for the supply of which were advertised for about four months ago, but no tenders having been sent in, a letter was sent to the captain ofH.M.S. Nymphe, asking if he had enough drill on board to supply the Naval Brigade with a summer uniform, and an answer came back in the negative, since which time nothing further had been <Jone in the matter. After a long conversation ifc was resolved to call for. tenders here immediately for the supply of a pair of drill trowsers and a Panama hat to each man. It was decided to fire for the General Government prize for long guns on Saturday afternoon next, when thres ov four
detachments will be, told, off. Some 'other /unimportant business. was disposed^ after which a vote of thanks t?o, the • Chairman ] and Secretary terminated the' proceedings. ' . :. >TnE; members 0f... the ' Naval Brigade are about to introduce a Yankee novelty into Nelson, having at a meeting held last evening resolved to hold a calico and fancy dress ball. The price of.admissioo has been fixed at as low figure as possible, aud this, combined with the novelty and purpose of the ball, viz., to augment the funds for the purchase of a summer uniform for the men, ought to prove a great attraction, and draw a large assemblage. It was decided to ask the Mayor and City Councillors for their patronage. The ball will probably take place in the course of a fortnight. At a meeting of the Port Eire Brigade, beld in their rooms on Monday, '-a vote .of; thanks .was recorded to the following gentlemen for their kindness in sending to the Brigade's Reading Room various useful and instructive books and serviceable gifts: — Messrs Lightband, Robert Lucas, B. Eranzen, H. D. Jackson, and William Besley. , .Subscriptions to, tbe amount of £6 were received,! and promises 0 f subscriptions to about the same amount to supplement members' contributions for : the purchase, of gear, &c. The Secretary reported having sent a request to the Town Brigade for the Port Brigade'sshare bf the Vnoney received from the Provincial Government for payment to them. It was resolved to procure a new hose reel and hooks, &c. The Port Brigade's room has now become a great boon to the inhabitants in that locality, as, in. addition to being used •as a Government school (and we believe it is now one of the most comfortable in the province), divine service is regularly held on Sundays, and the attendance is very good. In the evenings during the week after this month it will be regularly open as a Reading Room, and members will be admitted on payment of a small fee to cover expenses. The committee expect to be: able to announce a course of lectures shortly.
