The fortnightly meeting was held on Friday evening. Present — His Worship the Mayor, Crs Webb, Gray, Pickering, Levien, and T. Harley. Letters were read from the Undersecretary, stating that the bye-laws concerning gorso and cab stands had not been disallowed ; from several of the inhabitants of Brook-street Valley, complaining of tfce overgrowth of the willows, and also of the nuisance caused by goata being tethered in the street-— referred to the Public Works Committee; from Messrs W"ise and party, asking for an extension of time for fulfilling their contract in St. Tincent«street — six weeks allowed ; and from Messrs N. Edwards and Co., stating that it had been found impossible to supply the pipes ordered within the time specified, but that a portion would be shipped in the Helen Denny and the remainder follow in the Lochnagar. The report of the Gas and Waterworks Committee was read. It referred to the recent accident to the water pipe in Brook-street Valley, aud recommended that the Council should bear the cost of repairs on this occasion, but that the parties who caused it should be warned that in future they would be held liable. The City Surveyor's report showed that during the month ending 17th August, 48 tons 15 cwt of coal had been carbonised, yielding at tho rate of 8122 cubic feet to the ton. A tender was received from Mr Grant for supplying Maitai gravel for the Haven-road at 2s lid per yard. This was not considered satisfactory, and consequently was not accepted. An offer was received from Mr R. Carter to supply broken metal from the Bridge-street quarry at 6s per yard. Cr Harley thought it would be far better to at once make the road round the Rocks, by means of which an unlimited supply of good metal would be rendered available. Ultimately it was resolved to obtain one load from the Boulder Bank in order to ascertain the cost. The following notices of motion were given: — By Cr Harley— That this Council take into consideration the best means of procuring metal for our roada, and the best material to be used. By Cr Pickeriug— That, it appearing from the City Surveyor's report of the 18th August that the gasworks are at present capable of supplying fully twice the present demand for gas, the price be reduced for gas stoves only to 10s per 1000 feet on and after the Ist September proximo.
