The Kennedy sails for West Coast ports on Thursday morning, A collision of a very serious nature took place yesterday morning, shortly after one o'clock at the entrance of Newcastle hirbor, by which the ste„m-tug Southland was sunk in some 20 fathoms. The following particulars have been supplied by Captain Kellv, master of the collier Waratah, and Mrßussel, who was on board. The S uthla-d, having' in .nw the brig r.ady Belmore, left Sydney at 7 p.m. on Saturday, and reached Newcastle about Ia m yesterday. The Waratah, about the same hour, left the Newcastle Wharf bound tor Sydney- The lights of both vessels were buroing brightly aud dhdnctly visible; the Waratah kept her port helm for fhe purpose of passing round the bell buoy and to the southward of the Southland. Suddenly as the Bte.mera approached each other, the latter vessel was observed to st <rboard her helm, and at once Captain K<lly put his helm astarboard to avo'd collision, but unfortu-aat-ly 'he Southl <nd again shifted her helm, and before the Waratah would answer her port brim she struck the Southland before the paddleb jx on the port aide, cutting her down, and she sunk in about twenty minutes. Endeavors were made to put a warp on board fhe Southland, but it cou'd nos be effected, bb ifc was blowing hard and the Waratah had no room to get into positi m. The Southland is the pronerty f f the Co-operative Tag Company. —Sydney Herald. July 31
