THE PLEASURES OF THE RINK.

{From the Pall Mall Gazette.)

The evidence given at an inquest held on Wednesday, at Clapham, on the remains of nn unfortunate gentleman who was killed at a skating rink is worthy of attention by those who engage iv this fascinating but deadly amusement. The deceased, it was stated, was accustomed to " rinkio" " and it was not by any want of skil^on his part, that he met wieh tbe accident which caused his death. Some one of the other " rinkers " skated against, him and knocked him down. He felt much shaken and hurt, but soon recovered enough to go on skating. He had, however, received a concussion of the spine; two days later he lost the use of his limbs, and ultimately he died from tbe effect of the injury. The jury returned a verdict ot accidental death, and the coroner remarked that the wonder was, tbat more fatal accidents did not occur from rinkiug. If all the accidents that have occurred at rinks were tabulated and published there can be little doubt that life insurance offices would demand extra premiums from rinkers. There are perils by land and perils by sea, but greater than these are the perils by rink. It is, however, the novelty of the danger which no doubt constitutes its great charm; and this again is enhanced by the possibility of disfigurement as well as death, for the uose is often broken when tbe thread of life is not snapped.
