WAIMEA ROAD BOARD.

TUEBDAT, August 1. The Board met at Richmond, all the members being present. Tbe minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. The Overseer reported:—" S.DOe the last meeting of the Board the gravel oarts have been kept constantly at work in the various sub-districts in effecting minor repairs. According to your in structions I am employed putting tbe swamp roads in passable order. £19 14s is tbe amount spent here up to the present time; they were in a dangerous condition. I wish to bring before your notice tbe oeceasity of gravelling the roads leading to tho railway stations at Stoke and Hope. I have inspected work done by Mr Hildretb, and value the same at £2 Bs. The furze catting in Eves' Valley I have not done, waiting for further instruotions, and that tenders be invited for the same. Mr Hodgens has removed the blockage complained of by Mr Byrne iv Dovedale, but refuses permission to enter on his land on tbe opposite side of the road to clear and deepen the old course cut Borne years ago by the Board. Nothing has been done to the bridge over the Dove river on account of the pile driving machine being in use elsewhere. It might be advisable to have the old broken monkey re-oast and a lighter frame made. The approaches to the Appleby and Wairoa bridges have been gravelled, as. they were much washed atout by the late flood; 1500 feet of pianking has been procured for the bridge at Spring Grove. The bill for these repairs is £31 10a 6d. The amounts expended on the different districts are:— Stoke, £24 16s6d; Waimea Ei at, £66 3s 9d; Spring Grove, £73 Bst 7d; Wakefield, £56 4 3 4d; Waimea West, £14 2a; Dovedale, £27 2s 3d." Resolved, That tbe overseer continue the necessary repairs on the Swamp road, and report to next meeting as to tbe probable cost of gravelling the roads near the railway crossings; also to have the gorse in Eves' Valley cleared sufficiently wide to permit carts to pass one another.

-' : .-_ — * The following tenders were accepted: — W. Ricketts, for the breakwater f by Trass', £70, and for repairs at Pretty Bridge, £30; Jas. Fisher, for forming road at Ford's Hill, £55; J. Osborne, for a brick drain in Waimea West, £16 ss, tbe Board finding bricks. The plan and estimate for a cartbridge at Stratford's Creek were examined, and the consideration, deferred until nest meeting. Resolved, That in reply to enquiry made by the Motueka Highway Board, as to when this Board will be likely to proceed with the formation of the road between Thorpe and Orinoco, they be informed that the Board is still out of funds for that work. A letter was read from the Town Clerk of Nelson requesting to be in- : formed whether the Board is willing to contribute £125, being one-fourth of the estimated cost of making a halftide road round the rocks, aud also whether, in the event of such a .road, being made, the Board would objeot to the removal by the City Council of metal .for road Making fram that.portion of the sea beach along the proposed line of road which lies withia the; Board's district. Resolved, That the following reply be sent: — That the Board, though recognising the great importance of uniting the Waimea with the town by the direct road round the rooks, and with every desire to assist in bringing about so unquestionable a benefit toth to town aud country, regret their pecuniary inability at the present time' to aid in carrying out this project. The erection by Mr Jenkins «f gatee on two of the roads ,in Stoke having been represented to the Board, the Secretary was directed to give Mr | Jenkins notice to remove them, as being ' obstructions. I Mr Harley having stated that Mr Martin had expressed his intention to offer to the Board a large quantity of grave! on certain conditions as to its application, the Overseer was directed to make enquiries and so report. A letter was read from Mr Beitt, requesting tbe Board's attention to the great want of bridges across the Dove, whereby the children were prevented from attending regularly at the school. Resolved, that plans and estimates for a foot bridge be laid before the next meeting. A letter was read from Mr I. Gibbs, requesting attention to the road running through his own aud Mr Saltan's property, aod leading to a never-failing supply of limestone and timber, wbich only needs a better road to be brought into use. Resolved, That the question of subsidising this road be conuidered next meeting. Mr G, Bell applied for permission to deposit timber on the gravel reserve in Maddock's busb, which wan granted on condition of his paying a nominal rent. Resolved, That in view of tbe present state of the funds, tbe Overseer reduce the expenditure as muoh as possible duriug the present month. Resolved, That tha Oveaseer and Secretary proceed during this month with tbe assessment, so as to lay it before the next meeting. Warrants were signed for £324 16a 9d.
