A Parliamentary paper has been published containing a return of the waste lands disposed of in the several provinces from the 4th March, 1863 to the 31st December, 1875, specifying the area of laud sold for cash and the proceeds tbreeof, and area of land otherwise disposed of. Prom this we make the following extract, showing the full amount sold, exclusive of rode
and poles, and the actual cash received therefor, omitting shillings and pence :
In addition to the cash, payment was received in "scrip of all kinds and remission certificates " to the amount of £278,859 ; for public works executed 81,850 acres were disposed of, £70,765 being the value of the work done; 877,680 acres have gone to settle old land claims and in the shape of Native and public reserves and grants to military settlers, and 448,671 acres to immigrants, making the total of laud sold or otherwise disposed of during the period indicated 9,630,347 acres. The return further shows that the total area of the various provinces is 67,117,187 acres, Auckland heading the list with 17,000,000 acres, and Otago coming next with 13 ; 257,000, Canterbury following with 8,693,000, and Wellington nnrl Nelson being next with seven millions each. The total amount of land sold since the foundation of the colony is 11,173,849 acres.
