CENTRAL BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the Board was held yesterday. Present —Mr Barnicoat the Bishop of Nelson, Messrs Daneker, Malcolm, Talbot, Rout, Burn, Atkinson, Catley, Shephard, Jackson, Condell, Holland, Fairhall, Campbell, Fell, and Broad. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The Secretary was instructed to have the resolutions of the Board condemnatory of the proposed Education Bill printed, with the view of sending copies to the members of the Ministry, and to all Nelson members in both Houeea of the General Assemby. A resolution of the Town Committee was read, calling the attention of the Board to certain letters published in the Evening Mail by Mr Price, master oi the first division of Bridge-street Bchool, and containing reflections on the Inspector's report of his school. A letter from Mr Price to the Town Committee was also read, in which he apologised for having written in the public press, but desired the Committee to lay before the Board his requeßt for an enquiry. It was resolved, That this Board concurs in the action of the Town Committee in censuring Mr Price for criticising in the public prints the Inspector's report, and does not think that he has made out any case for enquiry. The following amendment was lost— That the Board proceed to appoint a committee to enquire into the present condition of the first division of the Bridge*street school. Mr Condell's application for £3 to remunerate monitors. at Stoke during the month of May—- less the amount paid to Mr Barnett as head money during that period — was acceded to. The scale oi Committee allowances for 1876-7, as proposed by the Finance Committee, was adopted. The allowances to Local Committees for the ensuing year, to defray the cost of buildings and repairs, as proposed by the Finance Committee, was adopted with two exceptions; the items " reshingling Stoke school," and " repairing house at Neudorf," being postponed until further information can be obtained. The Secretary was instructed to ask Mr Tarrant to examine and report upon the present etite of the house at Neudorf. The Secretary was instructed to advertise for tenders for a fourteen years' lease of the Pangatotara reserve. Mr Robinson's offer of £2 for the echool-house at Clifton was referred to the Motupipi Committee. Mr Haswell's offer of £1 per annum for sections 224 and 226, Ahaura, was accepted. Mr M'lvor'e offer of £1 per annnm for Noe. % 148 and 149, Ahaura, was accepted. Eesolved, That the Board accept, ■witb lhanks, the Provincial Government's offer of the use of a bouse at Westport for the master there, and that the Secretary be inetructed to ascertain from the Westport Committee what will be the probable cost of putting the hout>e into thorough repair. The following notices of motion were given ; — 1. By Mr Eout, That as the special subjects, Latin and Algebra, are no longer taught in the first division of Bridge.street school, the emoluments of the master) from the 30th of September next be at the came rate as those of other teachers doing similar work. 2. By Mr Atkinson, That the Infepector be instructed to enquire into and report to the Board from lime to time as to the kind and degree of punishment inflicted in the several Bchools under the control of the Bo*rd. 3. By Mr Burrell, That a house be provided for the master of .Ngatimoti school, or that an allowance of £12 per annum in lieu of a house be made him.Bank overdraft, August 3rd, £104 19*.
