Port Chalmers, Friday. The c:ty of New York passed the bar at 8-30 a.m. Gketmouth, Friday. At four o'clock this morning the Brunner Gorge railway suspension bridge, which was expected to be open for trsfll. next month, I fell with an awful crash Ino tbe river. The anchor plates on the south aide h*d been snappel through too much strain being placed on tbem, causing the whole bridge to collapse. No lives were lost. The anchor pates were generally considered too weak, but were according to designs sent from Wellington. Wellington, Thursday. The De Murska Company are having a most successful season here Last night and Monday evening the Oddfellow's Hall was crowded- It i B understood that more than £200 was taken last ni.ht. Captain Thompson, Harbsr-master at Port Chalmers, reports, at the request of the Post-master-General, the the detention of the City of New York is owing to the heavy f ea on tbe bar, lent up by the recent S.E. gale in the offing. The steamer draws 2tft3in and the exact depth of water on the bar at low water on the 20th was 17Jft; rise of tide yesterday barely ffft* to-day, sfr 4in; allowance for wave and bar, 3ft, thus leaving no margin for the ship to get out without striking the bar. Today it is still dangerous, but, notwithstanding the present southeast ga'e, tha sea is going down, and hopes are entertained that the steamer will get oat to-morrow; she has made three attempts to get out, as she ought to have lelt yesterday morning. Friday. Mr O'Shea reports the flour market overstocked at £11 to £1 1 10s; oats, 2s 3d to 2a Sd* miize. 4s s.l to 4s 9d; bran scarce, at Is to Isljd; pollird, £7; hams, lOJd t) lld; b»con. !)d to 10J; eliees?, 9Jd; pot-toes, 65s to 70s. The fancy dress ball at Sir J. Vogel's last night was a great success. About 250 were present. Chbistchurcit, Thursday. A considerable advance Ins taken place in the wheat market; some heavy lines have changed^ hinds for English shipments and speculation stocks ara considered insufficient for New Zeahnd requirements; millers stocks are low. At a meeting of the Christchurch shareholders of the Titanic Steel and Iron Company, it was reported that a man from Melbourne who had discovered a flux for smelting the Taranaki sand has gone North in the Arawata. Friday. Our Football Club contemplate sendiug a t r am to Auckland and Wellington this season, and if sufficient funds can be ob'ained the team wiil also visit Dunedin, Taranaki, and Nelson. Grahamstoww, Thursday. Mr M-Mtsters has extracted 43 ounces of pure silver from 1 cwt of regular or moHen ore from :the Richmond Hill Silver Mine. It is stited thut ths yield is equal to 140 ounces of silver to the ton of ore.. ti ti FrHav. Ihe Thames Advertiser was sold by auction at noon to-day. Tlie bidding commenced at £1000. and was rapidly run up to £2500, and ultimately knocked down to Mr Wilkinson for £2600. Mr Wilkinson was ona of the original proprietors. _ Napier, Thursday. Siraonsen's Opera Company last night played '« Masame'lo" to a crowded house Signor Carmini Morley was splendid. The opera was an immense success.
