THE GRIP ROAD.

To the Editor op the 'Evening Mail.' Sir, — Would you allow me space in your co'unma for the following extract from the i minutes of the Hampden Road Board of the 21st Julj i— "The Grip contract was considered by the ■♦I mn 2 t - he Secreta T stated that along with Mr Smith, he had valued the work, and wai of opinion that not more than £70 worth of work had been done altogether, ana the

Board regretted tbat the Government had sent up Mr Akersten, who pissed certain | portions of the work though such had not been flni hed in accordance with the speciflca- j tions. The Board were therefore of opinion that tho Government had acted most un- | warrantably in sending anyone to examine and j pass work which had bsen made over to them, especially when they had appointed an Overset r of their own in whom they had every confidence; neither was the Government exercising that care or economy of the public funds in paying men for work which they had not completed. The Board had therefore j come to the conclusion to have nothing more to do with this particular contract; or to have in future anything to do with any work which the Government might wish to execute in this district, unless the funds for such work were placed to the Board's credit, aud the Board had the issuing of the specifications and the complete control over its execution. The Secretary was instructed to write the Government to tbat effect." Comment on the above is unnecessary. 1 I am, &c, One who was There. . Hampden, 22nd July, 1876.
