The Nelson Evening Mail. MONDAY, JUL Y 24, 1876.

Tiirc Luna will sail for "Wellington to-morrow afc noon. She will pick up the Governor and party at Wakapuaka. The meeting which was held last week for the purpose of discussing the desirability of forming a Company to purchase fche Nelson Cloth Factory, and was adjourned uutil this eveuing, has beeu further adjourned until this day week. The members of the Naval Brigade proceeded over fco Haul Ashore Island in their boat on Saturday afternoon for the purpose of trying their " infants " with shot. A target of the most primitive kind, consisting of a tar barrel, was anchored out at sea 1500 yards away, but it was only discernible at times, the strong south-easter that was blowing keeping ifc continually on. the move. In spite of these drawbacks the firing was remarkably good, and nearly every shot fell very close to the target, but not one struck ifc. The sights of the guns are very faulty, and until the Brigade procure better ones good shooting cannot be expected of them. The Interprovincial Regatta Committee will meet at the Trafalgar Hotal afc half-past seven this evening. A well contested football match was played on Saturday afternoon between the College team, assisted by four old Collegians, and the town club, the result being again in favor of the former. Next Saturday a match will be played between fifteen old Collegians and a like number of all comers. An interesting game is to take place in September, when the Wellington College will send over a team to meet our youngsters, who hope to be able to give a better account of themselves than they did afc Wellington, when they were "only just off° the steamer, after a rough passage across the Strait. In the Resident Magistrate's 'Court this morning the following civil cases were disposed of:— John Alexander (of Motueka) v. David Bell, fruiterer, of Wellington, for £89 Os Id for fruit supplied. Judgment for plaintiff for £70 and costs. Mr Tell appeared for the plaintiff, and Mr Pitt for the defendant.—W. Hale v. H. Cameron, nurseryman, of Hokitika, for £35 9s 2d, amount of bill of exchange.—Moorhouse v. Shaw, for £20, amount of promissory note. In both these cases, which were undefended, judgment was for plaintiff for -jinount claimed and costs. We are glad to find that the Agricultural Association have once again come to the front and made arrangements for a ploughing match to be held in Mr Canning's grounds at Richmond on Thursday next. Previous matches have shown that we have in our country districts plough men who have every reason tobe proud of their skill, and it is gratifying to find that an opportunity is to be afforded them of displaying ifc before a large number of spectators, such as we hope to see on the ground on Thursday. The spirit of emulation i that these matches create among the younger men who earn their living by the cultivation of the soil has already proved useful iv inducing them to take greater interest in their work, thereby, of necessity, making better ploughmen of them. The Association, therefore, deserves every encouragement in its preseut effort to revive these matches. 'Ihe conditions under which the prizes are to be awarded will be found in our advertising columns. Por the convenience of townspeople who may wish to attend the match a special train will leave Nelson at one p.m., returning from Richmond at five o'clock. An entertainment that promises to be exceedingly amusing is to be given on Thursday evening next by an amateur dramatic company, most of whom have appeared on the stage in Nelsou on previous occasions and have never failed to give the most complete satisfaction. The object of the entertainment is to provide a sum of money required by the Harmonic Society for erecting a new platform to be used on concert nights, the present one being in a dangerous-sly rotten condition, and for the purchase of new music, which is also greatly needed. Tho piece selected for the occasion is Q-oldsmith's comedy " She stoops to conquer," which was acted here some years ago, when some of the leading parts were taken by the same individuals who will represent them on the present occasion. Those who remember how "Tony Lumpkin" then set the house in a roar with his quainfc sayings will not need much pressing to go and renew their acquaintance with hitu afc the Oddfellows' Hall on Thursday night. Por the convenience of residents in the country who may desire to be present a special train will be laid on, leavin"Poxhill afc G p.m. and Nelson on the return trip at 11 o'clock. Thirty-four Prussian immigrants, who arrived by the Camperdown for Jackson's Bay, were forwarded to their destination from Wellington direct by the b.b. Tui.
