The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, JULY 12, 1576.

A veet favorable, report of the New i Zealand Insurance Company, presented at the meeting of shareholders held at Auckland this afternoon, will be found ia our telegraphic column. A meeting of tha members of the City Rifles was held after parade last night, when Corporal Hammond was elected Sub-Lieutenant. After the election Lieutenant G. Hodgson announced his intention of resigning as soon as the Company could find a successor. Thb longer Dr Carr remains here the more popular do his entertainments become. Last night again the Hall was crammed, and the antics of the subjects were, if possible, mora ludicrous than on previous occasions. Owing to his great success the Doctor will remain longer than he at first intended, and give another seance on Friday night.A meeting of the Interp.ovinciat Regatta Committee was held last night, Captain Cross [in the chair. A letter was read from Mr Lloyd, of "Westport, asking that sailing races for boats of any rig under 2_, and under 20 feet keel, and a rowing race for watermen in pair and four-oared skiffs be placed on the programme; also from Mr T. R. Hi Taylor, asking that the prize for the whaleboat race be increased to £100. It was agreed that the Committee should consider these suggestions. The meeting was adjourned until Tuesday, the 25th instant. The City Rifles and Naval Brigade mustered last evening in the Drill Shed for the Commanding Officer's monthly inspection. After the usual preliminaries a few tactical evolutions were performed, in all of which they acquitted themselves in a creditable mauner. The Companies were then put through the bayonet exercise by Captain Richardson and {Lieut. Hodgson, in which they acquitted themselves j with a precision and exactness that did them credit. There was a large number I of spectators present, who manifested great interest in the proceedings. I The annual meeting of the parishionI ers of Christ Church was held last night, the Rev. J. Leighton in the chair. The churchwardens presented a very favorable statement of the financial aftairs of the church during the past year, showing a small balance to commence the current year with, after having paid all salaries to date, in addition to £81 of arrears, £33 for the rent of Brookside for the clergyman prior to the parsonage being built, and £1_ 18s lOd as premium for insuring the clergyman's life. Besides this, handsome additions in the shape of choir stalls and a new reading-desk bad been made in the church by private subscription, and £131 12s had been raised by a sale of work and a Christmas Tree towards reducing the debt on the parsonage. The report was adopted and the accounts were passed. Mr Acton Adams was then re-appointed Minister's, and Mr Pickering re-elected Parishioners' churchwarden, Mr Leighton and the meeting generally taking the opportunity of referring in complimentary terms to the mannsr in which they had conducted the business affairs of the church, and expressing their thanks for the services they had rendered. The following gentlemen were elected to serve on the Vestry: — Messrs C. Hunter Brown, Moore, Sealy, Pitt, Cooke, Scaife, and Richmond. The churchwardens announced the receipt of a letter from Mr Leighton, enclosing a cheque for £50 from Edward Hafcton, Esq., of Seafortb, Liverpool, towards the parsonage fund. The churchwardens were instructed to write to Mr Hatton, expressing the thanks of the parishioners for his handsome donation. Totes of thanks were passed as follows :— To Mrs Richmond for the exertions she had used iu raising a sum of money sufficient to erect new choir stalls and reading-desk j to the ladies of the congregation for the services they had rendered in reducing the debt on the parsonage ; to the members of the choir for their very efficient services ; to the churchwardens; and to the reverend chairman.
