THE FIRE BRIGADES.

To _KE Editor ov the * Evening Mail. Sib.— Your correspondent " Salamsnd- r " in hi. Lett r of Friday bas been kind enough to give me credit for astuteness; would that I could give him as much credit for candour. Most of bis statements are incorrect , and I nincerely hope that he has been misinformed upon thtm. lie says that I " was well aware that for some time there had been a spirit of jealousy between the two Brgades; " to which statement I give a moat unqualified denial. I would a«k him whether the jealousy is not oa their side, and also what this Brigade ha . pot to be jt a'ous about. He then .ays th t the jealou yia over the Hall Now he knows better. The feeling shewn by the Town Brigade 1 consider to bestrict'y honest, and, looking at the circumstances, I could .cc no other course fian for the Brigade to do as they have done. 1 think that it is a euhje.t that " Salamander " would do well to leave alone, and not make the ciroumstances too public. "A still tongue makes a wise hf-aJ." Witb regard to tbe apportionment, I slid consider it unfair, as I thh-k it wom'd have heen mora fair to have apportioned it according to the rate book. With rega r d to the morbid desire of tbe Town Brigade to crush that at the fort, it must be only in his imagination. The Town Brigade always supported them liberally, as facts wiU show; but the Port were only eati.-fled when tbey had everything they asked for, whether we could atlord it or not. I perceive he fails to touch upon the main point ol my argument— the fact of two rival Brigades in so small a community — I therefore suppose tbat he acknowledges it. Ido hope that in his next he will avow himself, giving ua leas L.tin and more ieason, and thereby endeavor to overcome that morbid feeling he seems to be laboring under. — Your's, &c, William Cookskt.
