Colonel Chesney, the reputed author of tbe " Battle of Dorking" which created such a sensation in England, died lately at the comparatively early age of 48 years. In tbe early part of March, white grouse from Norway were sold in London at BJ. and 10J. each, aod Norwegian hares afc le. 6 J; to 2a. each. The markets were glutted with foreign game and wild fowl. The Mineral colt, the winner of the Derby, is the property of Herr Aristide Bataszi, who had only joined his brother Hector on the English turf during the last two or three years, but during his short c.reer has been very successful. The Mineral colt, though not according to latest quotations first favorite, was backed for large money. Amoog the beta recorded in bis favor, in addition ta those already alluded to, we notice at different times £4,000 to £200, £8,000 to £1,000, £1,500 to £200, &c, Ao..' Petrarch, - the horse tbat won the Two Thousand Guineas, and was the first favorite for the Derby, waa purchased before thegreat Newmarket event by Lord Dupplin, for £11,500. He is not the flrat; eleven thousander who bas failed to carry out the purpose for which he was bought, for Kingsioa Was boughs, by the Marquis of Hastings for tbe same sum io Gladiateur's year, and, more unfortunate tbatr Petrarch, who has repaid. tho greater portion of hie purchase money, never won a penny afterwards.
